The 2005 SU football squad will sport a new look from
head to toe when it hosts West Virginia in the Carrier
Dome on September 4. SU Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl
Gross and Orange football coach Greg Robinson unveiled
the new-look uniforms with four seniors modeling the
various color combinations on Wednesday at the Carrier
Dome.
“We want to kick off the Greg Robinson era of SU
football on the right foot and the new-look uniforms are
part of it,” Gross said. “We designed the uniforms to
respect the past and represent the future. For example,
the stripes on the shoulders are representative of the
uniforms that Jim Brown and Ernie Davis wore with
stripes on their sleeves and also reflect the style of
today’s uniforms that do not have the longer sleeves.”
Four color combinations will be available for the
Orange in 2005, including orange pants with a white
jersey, orange pants with a blue jersey, white pants
with a white jersey, and white pants with a blue jersey.
The uniform will be complemented with a helmet featuring
numbers on the side and a blue stripe down the middle
and black shoes. The football players requested the
change to the black shoes.
“These uniforms respect the past and represent the
future,” said SU head coach Greg Robinson. “Respecting
the tradition of this University in how we appear is
important. At the same time we must represent the future
in our own way. These uniforms are not identical to
1959, but they have similar characteristics. They have a
new millennium look to them. The helmet is what it is
all about, having the number on the side and the stripe
down the middle. That is the Syracuse tradition.”
“The helmet is part of our theme. The numbers on the
side of the helmet glorify the past,” Gross said. “When
the players requested the black shoes, I explained that
black cleats represent the foundation of our program and
the legacy of some of the greatest players in the
history of football, including Jim Brown, Ernie Davis
and Floyd Little. I told them when you put on the black
cleats you will be reminded of the greatness, the
toughness, the intensity and the best of Syracuse
University’s football history. I told them to leave
their mark on the field with the shoes and carry the
legacy forward.”
Today, Syracuse University unveiled changes to their
football uniforms. Athletic director Daryl Gross and
football coach Greg Robinson hosted the fashion show at
the Carrier Dome to show off the team's new look.
The helmets are orange with a 3-D number in blue on
both sides. The pants have stripes in combinations of
orange, blue, and white. Two of the jersey's are blue
and two are white with stripes on the shoulders and no
names on the back. The shoes are black.
"You think about, there's just a lot of great
championship teams. And how do you incorporate the
history of this great athletic program, you know, into
the current schemata of what we're doing with our
uniforms," Gross said.
The uniforms were orange. It was a look that had not
changed in the past nine seasons.
Gross and Robinson are not saying which uniform will
be worn the first game.
