On
January 24, Worcester welcomed the first professional
baseball team in 71 years to call Central Massachusetts
home. Today, that team received a name when team
officials introduced the Worcester Tornadoes and
unveiled several logos at a press conference at the
College of the Holy Cross.
“The name embodies the strength and dominating force
the team will strive to display on the field,” said Alan
Stone, Tornadoes CEO and President. “Manager Rich Gedman
is assembling a team that will represent the spirit of
the city of Worcester and the Tornadoes name.”
The team’s primary logo features a bat inside of a
swirling funnel cloud that bears a prominent ‘W’ set
over top of a baseball. The name “Worcester Tornadoes”
rings the baseball in a stylized text on a black
background. Team hats will display the bat and funnel
cloud logo with the ‘W’. The team’s primary color will
be a burnt orange, accented by beige, grey, black and
white.
To help determine the name, team officials turned to
the fans and held a “Name Your Team” contest. The
organization accepted entries for nearly a week and was
overwhelmed by the response of the fans. More than 2,800
submissions and more than 4,600 individual entries were
received, with Tornadoes finishing among the most
popular.
Since so many entries were submitted with the
Tornadoes name, one fan was randomly selected as the
contest winner. Lynne Orsted of Worcester was chosen; as
the winner, she will receive a pair of season tickets,
an authentic team jersey and a team hat.
Team officials acknowledged that the name stems from
the devastating tornado that struck Worcester in 1953.
But the Tornadoes moniker was selected to celebrate the
city’s evolution since the event, not dwell on the
tragedy itself.
“The Worcester Tornadoes symbolize the spirit of
triumph, survival and growth the city of Worcester has
demonstrated since the 1953 tornado,” said Tornadoes
general manager Mike Lieberman. “It by no means
trivializes a tragic event, but rather celebrates how
the people of Worcester have prevailed and prospered in
the years since.”
The team announced that season tickets are now on
sale. Season ticket prices will start at $360 per seat
for lower box seats, followed by $450 for upper box
seats and $630 for VIP seats. A very limited number of
Executive season tickets will be available in the first
four rows behind home plate for $810 per seat. Season
tickets can be purchased by calling the Tornadoes office
at (508) 792-2288. The team’s current web site at
www.worcesterprobaseball.com will be replaced in the
near future by a full-featured site at
www.worcestertornadoes.com.
