Boston U. Unveils New Third Hockey Jersey

BU's new third jerseys harken to the 1950s.

Fans at Thursday's Boston University-New Hampshire game will see something that hasn't been seen during the lifetimes of most in attendance.

The Terriers plan to unveil third jerseys, turning back the clock with exact replicas of the 1958 uniforms. Although the design is not radically different from the present-day uniforms, they have additional stripes and an old-fashioned look, apparently including striped leggings.

"The idea came from the images I saw when we put up all the All-Americans in the new rink," Terrier coach Jack Parker said. "We had the Bob Marquis and the Bob Dupuis [in the Agganis Arena murals]. They had the late '50s uniforms on, and I was always looking for something to jump out at me to have a third shirt like a lot of other teams have had.

"When I saw that in the murals, I said, 'I like the looks of that uniform. Let's make one up and see how it looks.' And when we made it up, I liked it even better. We were going to wear it in the Beanpot, but we were the home team both nights, so we decided to do it here. We asked Dick Umile to have his team wear the whites. I wanted to have my seniors have a chance to wear them in our last regular-season game, so they're wearing them tonight."

The plan is to have the team wear the uniforms on various special occasions. "Once in a while, yeah," Parker said. "Although I think if a lot of people like them, we might use them a little bit more. We might take the negative of them and make the white uniform to use as our home jersey once in a while. But we will not get rid of our traditional 'Detroit' look."

The players will not be wearing throwback helmets. In fact, the team recently adopted more aerodynamic helmets with flashes of silver in them. "The players really like the light weight," equipment manager Mike DiMella said.
