The
Cardinals unveiled a redesigned logo Thursday and
promised to reveal a bold, new uniform this spring.
If only winning games was as easy.
The old, tame Cardinals logo, which made its debut on
the side of helmets in 1960, is gone. Replacing it is a
fierce-looking bird that looks like it has just been
told it's representing a franchise that has had one
winning season since moving to Arizona in 1988.
Cardinals officials acknowledged that winning will
make the new logo more attractive.
The team was looking for a logo that reflected the
aggressive style of play under coach Dennis Green as
well as the "bold" design of the new stadium being built
in Glendale, said Michael Bidwill, team vice president
and general counsel.
"The biggest thing is winning games," Bidwill said,
"and things like logos and uniforms all complement it."

The logo changes are subtle, while the coming uniform
redesign will be more "revolutionary," Bidwill said. He
declined to reveal any details.
The first player to wear the new logo on his helmet
will be defensive end Bertrand Berry, who will play in
the Pro Bowl on Feb. 13 in Honolulu.
The team planned to reveal the logo at a later date,
but it was being incorporated into several areas at the
new stadium, Bidwill said, so officials decided to make
it public.
It was designed in conjunction with NFL Properties
and it drew positive reviews from some current
Cardinals.
"The old bird kind of had a questionable look, 'Do I
want to eat that?' " Green said. "This bird looks like
he wants to eat it."
Growing up in Jacksonville, Texas, quarterback Josh
McCown is more familiar with birds that are hunted -
quail, ducks, etc. - than he is with cardinals. The new
Cardinals bird, he joked, "looks like it would shoot
back."
"I think it's a more determined look," safety Adrian
Wilson said. "We have a young team so I think it will
fit in with us."

Even a couple of older birds liked it. Former
Cardinals safety Larry Wilson was a rookie when the bird
made its debut in 1960 and he likes the new one better.
"When you go out to play, you really like to be
dressed up and feel good about yourself," said Wilson,
who's in the Hall of Fame.
"I'd like to have that thing hanging on my headgear,
because it looks a hell of a lot meaner than the other
one."
Owner Bill Bidwill went along with the changes, even
though he has been accused of being stodgy and
handcuffed to the past. He has been through changes
before, he said.
"I was talking earlier about the design of the
running bird in 1952, and then the helmet logo that came
out in 1960 that I was involved in," he said. "And I did
put the stripes on in '63 on the white jersey."
The upcoming changes will be considerably bolder,
Michael Bidwill said.
"We're not going to be just adding a stripe to the
sleeve," he said.
But, the elder Bidwill cautioned, the changes won't
be "so dramatic as to make anyone forget the Cincinnati
Bengals, but it will be different for us."
