Yuma's
new Golden Baseball League franchise has a stadium, a
manager, 11 players — and now it has a name: the
Scorpions.
The official announcement came Tuesday evening from
Scorpions general manager Pat Brown at Bahamas Bar &
Grill. The team also revealed its logo during the
ceremony.
"This is a name that's very appropriate for the area
we're in," Brown said. "Now, we can do good marketing
and have something that people can be proud of."
Fans originally submitted nominations for the new
team's name, which were then narrowed down to 10 in
November. Voting was done on the Web sites for the GBL
and The Sun, and Scorpions was the top selection.
"They're indigenous to the area, so I think it's
great," Yuma mayor Larry Nelson said. "It's a new start,
a new name and a new beginning."

As part of the contest, Sarai Camacho, 8, was
randomly selected from over a dozen entries for the name
"Scorpions." Camacho
won $500.
"At first I thought about it, and they're in the
desert, so I picked scorpions," Camacho, a third grader
at Desert View Academy, said.
The Scorpions will open their season in late May and
will play a 90-game season with Desert Sun Stadium as
its home ballpark.
There will be eight teams in the GBL next season,
three in Arizona (Mesa, Surprise, Yuma), four in
California (Chico, Fullerton, Long Beach and San Diego)
and one in Mexico (Tijuana).
Scorpions T-shirts and caps are currently available
at the team's offices, located at the Desert Sun Stadium
clubhouse.
"Scorpions is going to work for us," Brown said. "Our
league marketing director said he thought we were going
to lead the league in sales. We're going to make all the
teams that come in here afraid of Scorpions."
