CHICO, CALIF – Chico’s new professional baseball team at last has a handle. After more than three months and sifting through over 350 entries, the winner of the “Name the Team” contest presented by Safeway is THE CHICO OUTLAWS. The official announcement was made Wednesday afternoon at a public rally inside the Safeway store at 740 Mangrove Ave. in Chico.

“There were so many great entries in the ‘Name the Team’ contest; determining the winner was a constantly evolving process with the community involved at nearly every stage,” general manager Bob Linscheid said prior to Wednesday’s rally. From late August through mid-November, fans submitted hundreds of name and mascot ideas to the team’s downtown Chico offices and through the Golden Baseball League website. The entries – with the help of an advisory group made up of area media, education, business, marketing and sports representatives – were then whittled down to a list to 14, and fans attending the team’s World Series party November 27 voted for their top ten favorites. Team officials and Golden Baseball League executives then selected the Outlaws as Chico’s official name.

“We’re confident this is a name the fans will embrace,” Linscheid said. “The western theme associated with the Outlaws combined with a dynamite logo should appeal to everyone…and the name just may throw a little fear into the hearts of our opponents this coming season.” Chico, one of eight charter teams in the new Golden Baseball League, will begin play in May, 2005.

At Wednesday’s rally, a banner was unveiled featuring the Outlaws logo – a batter with a black cowboy hat and red bandana with “old west” style lettering spelling out the team name. Lennie Votaw of Corning was presented a check for 500 dollars for submitting the winning “Name the Team” contest entry.

A preliminary artist’s sketch of the team’s mascot was also displayed at the rally. The yet-to-be-named mascot is a cartoonish, kids-friendly raccoon.

Fans attending the rally also had the chance to purchase the first official Outlaws team caps, t-shirts and sweatshirts. Outlaws merchandise will be available to the public at the team’s downtown offices at 555 Main Street, Suite 200, just in time for holiday gift-giving.

The Outlaws also had 2005 season ticket plan information available at Wednesday’s rally. The team is continuing to offer season ticket plans at 1997 prices through December 31; fans should call 345-3210 for more information.

The team also acknowledged its 2005 Founding Partners at Wednesday’s rally – Feather Falls Casino in Oroville, Tri-Counties Bank and Enloe Medical Center.
