FOREST, Ill. - The Bears will wear orange jerseys with
navy block numbers and a helmet with a plain white "C"
Thursday when they visit the Dallas Cowboys on
Thanksgiving Day at Texas Stadium. The classic uniforms,
which were worn by the Bears during the 1946 season,
were unveiled Tuesday during a press conference at Halas
Hall with cornerback R.W. McQuarters and long-snapper
Patrick Mannelly modeling the new threads.
"The orange is sweet," said McQuarters, who wore the
color at Washington High School in Tulsa, Okla., and
again at Oklahoma State University. "When you see it,
it's like, 'Whoa.' The look is tight."
The NFL chose the 1946 uniform, which features narrow
navy stripes on the sleeves, no numbers on the shoulders
and a slightly wider stripe down the pant leg.
Most players found the orange uniforms amusing. One
said the team resembled Illinois Department of
Transportation workers. Another joked that they looked
like prisoners in a work release program.
"I've never worn orange," said punter Brad Maynard.
"One of my rival high schools was orange and I hated
orange. I like orange now. It's my favorite color now."
Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye wore an orange jersey
twice when he was with the Miami Dolphins.
"It's bright," Ogunleye said. "We had two big
defensive tackles and they just looked like big
pumpkins, so it was funny."
