New marks revealed at Basketball Tipoff Luncheon
KANSAS
CITY, Mo. - The UMKC Intercollegiate Athletics
Department unveiled a new set of athletics marks during
its basketball Tipoff Luncheon at the Hollywood Room of
the Hereford House Wednesday (Nov. 3).
UMKC began the development process last January with
sports branding firm Plan B Branding of San Diego,
Calif. Before developing the marks, Plan B worked with
members of the UMKC alumni, faculty, student body,
student-athletes and constituents to define UMKC's
unique personality. The firm also helped conduct a
campus-wide survey asking students to identify the "UMKC
Experience."
"A
university's image is much more than a logo on a shirt
or cap. It's a unique story waiting to be told," said
Plan B Branding partner Jason Klein. "All the students,
athletes and alumni provided us with wonderful input of
UMKC's unique story."
The new primary mark depicts an athletic-looking
kangaroo in a blue UMKC sweater, with an updated "UMKC"
arched above the kangaroo. The new set of marks also
contains three secondary marks, a word mark and
sports-specific marks for all UMKC intercollegiate
athletics teams. The current UMKC athletics logo, in use
since 1999-2000, will remain in use.
"There
are a lot of variables that go into creating new marks
on any college campus, especially intercollegiate
athletics," said UMKC Assistant Athletics Director for
External Relations Terry Mohajir. "We were fortunate to
have a mutual collaboration of people that came together
to execute this process. Director of Marketing and
Promotions Jana Ross did an outstanding job of leading
the process in order to enhance our revenue streams in
the areas of licensing and merchandising."
