Southwestern Athletic Conference Unveils New
Football Uniforms
Russell Athletic unveils new football uniforms at
SWAC Media Day
BIRMINGHAM,
Al. – The Russell Athletic Corporation showcased the
brand new football jerseys of the Southwestern Athletic
Conference teams at Media Day on Friday. Russell in
association with New Vision Sports Properties signed a
five-year partnership with the SWAC, Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
The new football uniforms are stylish in comparison
to what the teams were previously sporting. Alcorn
State’s new home jersey is purple with gold siding,
similar to the look of the Denver Broncos uniform. On
the front body of the jersey is a white number with gold
shadow outline. Also displayed on the front of the
uniform is a SWAC and Russell logo on respective left
and right sleeves. The number is also displayed on the
shoulders and back. The biggest perk for the athletes is
that the jersey will display each individual’s his name
on the back.
As
part of the deal, the three conferences’ granted a
five-year exclusive licensing deal for Russell to
manufacture and sell the merchandise. Hence, fans will
finally be able to purchase the uniforms of their
favorite team(s) to wear to the stadium come game day.
In addition to football uniforms, the Russell
Corporation will also supply the men’s and women’s
basketball, women’s soccer and volleyball, softball and
baseball programs with uniforms. This is a huge benefit
to schools, as the athletic departments will no longer
have to front the expensive cost of uniforms. The
Russell Corporation will also provide the teams with
both casual and performance wears.
Alcorn State and the rest of the conference will just
sport new home uniforms in 2004. Russell will provide
the programs with away uniforms in 2005. “I love our new
look,” said offensive line coach Michael Ellis. “The
uniforms are stylish and the kids now have their names
on the back of their jerseys, which is a nice incentive
for them.”
Braves fans will get their first look at the new
uniforms on Sept. 11 when Alcorn State will host
defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m.
