Southwestern Athletic Conference Unveils New Football Uniforms

Russell Athletic unveils new football uniforms at SWAC Media Day

Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Jackson State, Alcorn State and Miss. Valley new uniforms.BIRMINGHAM, Al. – The Russell Athletic Corporation showcased the brand new football jerseys of the Southwestern Athletic Conference teams at Media Day on Friday. Russell in association with New Vision Sports Properties signed a five-year partnership with the SWAC, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

The new football uniforms are stylish in comparison to what the teams were previously sporting. Alcorn State’s new home jersey is purple with gold siding, similar to the look of the Denver Broncos uniform. On the front body of the jersey is a white number with gold shadow outline. Also displayed on the front of the uniform is a SWAC and Russell logo on respective left and right sleeves. The number is also displayed on the shoulders and back. The biggest perk for the athletes is that the jersey will display each individual’s his name on the back.

UAPB, Texas Southern, Southern, Prairie View and Grambling new uniforms. As part of the deal, the three conferences’ granted a five-year exclusive licensing deal for Russell to manufacture and sell the merchandise. Hence, fans will finally be able to purchase the uniforms of their favorite team(s) to wear to the stadium come game day. In addition to football uniforms, the Russell Corporation will also supply the men’s and women’s basketball, women’s soccer and volleyball, softball and baseball programs with uniforms. This is a huge benefit to schools, as the athletic departments will no longer have to front the expensive cost of uniforms. The Russell Corporation will also provide the teams with both casual and performance wears.

Alcorn State and the rest of the conference will just sport new home uniforms in 2004. Russell will provide the programs with away uniforms in 2005. “I love our new look,” said offensive line coach Michael Ellis. “The uniforms are stylish and the kids now have their names on the back of their jerseys, which is a nice incentive for them.”

Braves fans will get their first look at the new uniforms on Sept. 11 when Alcorn State will host defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m.
