Hockey fans pick 'Gladiators' for Detroit WHA

-- Starting this fall, the Detroit Gladiators will take
the ice at the Pontiac Silverdome.
The new Detroit franchise of the World Hockey
Association on Wednesday announced the name, which was
picked by hockey fans during a week of online voting.
The Gladiators name got 32 percent of the vote.
Other finalists were Detroit Cougars (28 percent),
Detroit Demons (19 percent), Detroit Speed (13 percent)
and Detroit Dynamos (8 percent).
The team also unveiled its logo, which features a
gladiator with a hockey stick and shield.
Senticore Inc., a public holding company based in
Hollywood, Fla., last month announced its purchase of
the Detroit franchise. It will begin its 38-game home
season in October at a newly installed ice arena in the
Silverdome.
