San Diego Riptide Unveil New Uniforms
Curtis, Clauch Model Uni’s, Discuss Season Opener
SAN
DIEGO – The Riptide have made plenty of changes during
the off-season , including a new operating group, a new
head coach, and plenty of new players. So when the team
hits the field this weekend in Arkansas, it is only
fitting that they will have a whole new look as well.
The team unveiled their new uniforms at a press
conference at the Sports Arena Wednesday afternoon with
returning stars Kane Claunch and Rico Curtis on hand to
model their new duds. New team operator and member of
Arena Group 2000, Ernie Hahn, was on hand to make the
introductions, and new Head Coach Mouse Davis also spoke
at length about his 2004 roster.
The new uniforms will feature a more classic “San
Diego” look, replacing the dark blue and black the team
featured in its first two seasons with a lighter baby
blue and orange. The uniforms, which have been compared
to those of local gridiron counterparts UCLA and the San
Diego Chargers, will be solid baby blue with white
letters and numbers for home games and white with blue
lettering for away games. The new orange outlines,
featured prominently on the shoulders and around the
numbers as well as the Riptide logo on the team’s new
helmets, is designed to tie the Riptide to the other
team with whom they share time at the Sports Arena, the
San Diego Gulls.
Head Coach Mouse Davis also took time to speak to the
crowd about the upcoming season, which begins this
Saturday in Little Rock, Ark. He detailed his roster,
going over each player and what he expects their role to
be during the 2004 season, before introducing Curtis,
Claunch and the new uniforms.
“I’m just a football coach. I don’t know much about
fashion,” quipped Davis when asked his opinion of the
new threads. "If I see that number 16 and number 37
scoring a bunch of touchdowns, then I'll absolutely love
the uniforms."
Fans
will get their first chance to see the team in their new
baby blues when the team battles the Green Bay Blizzard
to open their home schedule on Friday, April 9 at 7:00
p.m. at the Sports Arena. Charger great Junior Seau will
be on hand for the game and will be presented with one
of the Riptide’s new jerseys in honor of his numerous
contributions to the San Diego community, both on and
off the field. Fans will also receive t-shirt replicas
of the jerseys that feature the Riptide logo along with
Seau’s name and number “55” emblazoned on the back. Fans
can get their tickets for “Junior Seau Night” at the
Sports Arena for as little as $12 each at the Sports
Arena box office, Ticketmaster, or by calling the
Riptide offices at 866-RIPTIDE.
