La Salle U. Unveils New Athletics Logo

Brand New Image to Debut at Explorers’ Big 5 Game with Temple

Philadelphia, PA – La Salle University will introduce its official new athletics logo on Wednesday, February 25, at the Explorer men’s basketball game against Temple. The logo depicts a profile of a 17th century French explorer looking through a telescope with the words “La Salle Explorers” below. The logo uses the University’s colors of dark blue and gold.

The athletics logo and its related marks will be applied to all facets of athletics beginning on Wednesday night and continuing with selected uniforms worn by Explorer athletes starting in the upcoming spring athletic season. It is anticipated that the new logo system will be fully integrated into all facets of athletics by next fall.

Prior to the introduction of the athletics logo, Explorer athletes had gone into battle in a number of different and varying uniform designs and styles and without a single identifiable image. The new logo will replace the current “slanted La Salle” mark that has recently been used on many uniforms and other athletic-related clothing and signage.

“The new athletics logo design is a natural follow-up to the first step that we took a year ago in re-introducing the 17th century French explorer as our mascot,” said Joe Donovan, La Salle’s Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Communications. “It is also consistent with our broader initiative to communicate the University’s distinct identity,” he said.

The new athletics logo is the end result of nearly 10 months of continued research and development with input solicited from all members of the athletic department and other segments of the University community. “Reaction to the new logo, as it was previewed for members of the Explorer Club, La Salle’s athletic booster organization, and the Alumni Association Board of Directors was overwhelmingly positive,” said Donovan.

The athletics logo is one element of La Salle’s new graphic identity program, which was announced in December and began to appear in January on street banners that line the campus near 20th Street and Olney Avenue. The University’s new graphic identity, including the athletics logo, was developed by 160over90, a full-service marketing and communications agency headquartered in Philadelphia.
