In front of a raucous crowd at a Laredo Bucks game at
the LEC the name and potential logo were announced amid
smoke and pyrotechnics during the second intermission.
“There is a new brand of law in town, the Laredo
Law,” said Law President John Beckelhymer.
The logo, which is still awaiting league approval,
features seven points, the points represent the seven
flags of Laredo. The middle of the logo features an
overlapping double L which represents a brand honoring
the rich cattle history of the Gateway city. The logo is
designed to represent an old west Marshall badge. The
team colors are black, branding iron red and tan suede.
“Laredo has a long and distinguished history and we
felt this name really captured the spirit of the old
west along the border,” said Beckelhymer. “This name was
selected in part to honor the men and woman who serve
and protect us day in and day out. The Laredo Law will
play with that same intensity, class and perseverance
each game. There is no doubt that justice will be served
on the field.”
The team ran a contest inviting the public to submit
name suggestions for the team. Thousands of names were
suggested, but the name “Law” stood out.
The winner of the name the team contest was Felix R.
Tellez. Tellez is a lieutenant with the Laredo Police
Department.
The Laredo Law will play a 16-game regular season,
with eight games at home, beginning in late March of
2004. Laredo will have a natural rival as Rio Grande
Valley will also field an expansion team this season at
the Dodge Arena.
