Edmonton Aviators Unveil New Name, Uniforms
THE Edmonton Aviators … two new teams have landed!
A
group of community investors have been doing a lot of
work, research and planning to bring professional soccer
to Edmonton. These investors believe in our community
and want to work to ensure that Edmonton remains one of
the most dynamic and sports minded communities in North
America.
“Edmonton is a great community to live and work in.
Our groups focus will be to work co-operatively with the
community and it’s youth to make Edmonton an even better
place to live”, says Tom Newton, President - Edmonton
Aviators ownership group.
The investors are also fully committed to providing
every opportunity for local players to develop their
soccer skills. A significant amount of work has already
taken place at the grass roots level to ensure that this
goal is accomplished.
The franchise rights have been acquired for both a
Men’s and a Women’s soccer team. Both of these teams
…the Edmonton Aviators… will play in the United Soccer
Leagues (USL) beginning in spring of 2004.
“We are extremely excited about bringing such a high
caliber of soccer to Edmonton. Soccer is the fastest
growing sport in North America and is now the largest
participation sport in Canada. Greater Edmonton alone
has more than 40,000 registered soccer players”, says
Greg McDannold, Director of Business Operations -
Edmonton Aviators.
Both the Edmonton Aviators Men’s and the Edmonton
Aviators Women’s teams will play at Commonwealth Stadium
beginning in spring of 2004.
