Northeastern U. Unveils New Athletic Marks
An improved and refined series of Northeastern
Athletics marks, along with a striking new font style,
were revealed to the public on Thursday.
"Our mission was not to create a whole new identity,
but simply to enhance our current marks by making them
more appealing, distinct and marketable," said Athletic
Director Dave O'Brien. "I think we've accomplished that
with a series of logos that is a natural progression
from our previous ones. We're confident these marks will
be attractive to our students, alumni and fans."
For the first time, the primary Northeastern
Athletics logo includes a reference to Boston as the
next-generation Husky is leaping over a recognizable
city skyline that includes the newly constructed Zakim
Bridge. Other striking new features in the family of
logos and word marks include a fresh, two-tone
Northeastern "N" and paw, along with several dynamic
Husky poses. The font style is an aggressive upgrade of
the previous editions.
The refinement process took several months and was a
collaborative effort between a Northeastern committee
and Neohatch, a Boston-based company led by Thomas
Duane. Duane has designed new identities for college and
professional organizations since 1988 while working with
SME Design, SFX Entertainments and Woolf Associates.
Northeastern adopted the nickname Huskies in 1927 and
has had many different styles of logos and dogs. In
1997, NU adopted its current series of marks, which gave
the university's 19-sport athletic program a uniform
look and feel.
In association with the new logos, Northeastern will
unveil improved apparel and merchandise in the coming
weeks. Also, the official website of Northeastern
Athletics,
GoNU.com,
is currently undergoing a transformation to incorporate
the new marks and font style.
