Alabama hockey franchise gets name, colors
Hockey fans, say hello to the Alabama Slammers.
Slammers is the moniker of the newest member of the
World Hockey Association 2, who soon will play in
Pelham. The team's name, logo and colors were unveiled
Tuesday in a ceremony held at the Riverchase Galleria
mall in Hoover.
The logo features a fierce-looking steel worker
slamming down and scrambling the letters of the name
"Slammers" with a steel hammer. The figure is wearing
and a hard hat with an emblazoned white "A," which
stands for Alabama. The letters spelling out the name
"Slammers" are white with a blue outline.
The Slammers name was chosen from more than 1,000
entries during the team's "Name the Team" contest
sponsored by radio station WJOX 690. Arizona-based
Adrenalin Design Group Inc. developed the team' s
identity.
"We couldn't be happier with the team's new look and
identity," says Slammers president Taylor Hall. "Our
team will be built to reflect the hard- working and
aggressive nature the name implies."
The winning suggestion came from Alabaster resident
Brian Smith. His entry was chosen from a drawing of more
than 10 finalists who suggested the name Slammers.
Tuesday's announcement begins a partnership between
the team and the Riverchase Galleria that will result in
a Slammer's mall kiosk that soon will be unveiled.
The team begins play in the WHA2 league in October at
the Pelham Civic Complex, next to the Oak Mountain
Amphitheater.
