Southern Mississippi Unveils New Football Uniforms
HATTIESBURG,
Miss. – The Southern Miss Department of Athletics has
unveiled its new football uniforms in a news conference
on Thurs., July 17, 2003 at M. M. Roberts Stadium, where
several members of the football team fashioned the
uniforms for the media on hand.
The colors and looks of the uniforms have changed
several times over the years. For example, football used
the yellow gold in the uniforms until the early 1990s
when Vegas Gold was introduced and used until now.
Basketball, baseball and other athletic teams used Vegas
Gold in their uniforms over the last several years as
well.
In 2000, the department decided that its athletic
programs were inconsistent throughout from the football
team to the softball teams, in the color used on the
uniforms, applications of logos and overall look of the
uniforms. It was decided at this time that all the
uniforms, printed materials and overall look of the
athletic department was going to become more uniform and
have a consistent look throughout.
Focus groups, comprised of fans, donors, the business
community, faculty, and members of the athletic
department, were developed in the late spring and early
summer of 2001 to study the colors of the uniforms and
the look of the logo. Things that were factored into the
thinking of these groups were tradition and the
personality of Southern Miss athletics teams. The
department wanted a logo that was representative of
Southern Miss Athletics over the years, a blue-collar,
practical, hard-working class of student-athletes.
The new look for Southern Miss athletics was
introduced during a news conference in February, giving
a newer, more modern look to its logo.
