Oregon Takes Next Step in Evolution of Game-Day

Ducks unveil football uniform revisions to debut at
school's Aug. 30 season opener.
 EUGENE
-- The University of Oregon will take another step in
the evolution of design and technology of its football
uniforms when it officially dons the revised look for
its Aug. 30, 2003, opener at Mississippi State.
The uniform alterations were implemented as a result
of feedback solicited from current Oregon players,
coaches and fans, and are designed to accentuate the
university's green and yellow color scheme. The mutually
agreed upon design and technological advancements were
provided by Nike as part of its all-sports apparel
agreement with the university, which is entering its
eighth year.
 Highlighting
the revisions to the football uniforms, which were first
introduced prior to the 1999 season, is a concentration
of one brighter shade of green fabric in contrast to the
two-tone green jerseys and pants that have been worn
during the Ducks' previous home games. The thunder green
jerseys will replace the mallard green and dark spruce
color configuration that Oregon has worn for the past
four years, while the program's helmets will remain
unchanged.
In addition to the school's traditional home green
and road white uniforms, the Ducks will introduce a
third uniform option to its game-day apparel, which will
consist of a lightning yellow jersey and pant. Although
other of the university's intercollegiate athletic
programs have utilized yellow as part of their uniform
wardrobe, it is believed to be the first time Oregon's
football team has added a yellow jersey to its look.
In addition to the aesthetics alterations, the new
jersey will offer Oregon athletes a tighter fit yet
provide greater elasticity to aid in a wider range of
motion. A vent also is incorporated in the upper panel
in the back of the jersey to promote additional air
circulation underneath the players' equipment, while a
velcro element will be included in the shoulders of the
jersey to help alleviate slippage between the jersey and
shoulder pads.
 Each
of the three different styles of game pants will utilize
a lighter weight of fabric than the past and is designed
to retain less moisture than its predecessors.
Yet the most technological innovation incorporated
within the uniform revision revolves around a
patent-pending cooling vest offered to players, with the
system relying on humidity-free compressed air pumped
into the vest to decrease the body temperature of
players in order to combat fatigue and enhance
performance. The feature is designed to cool and dry the
upper body of players where the greatest moisture and
heat is retained.
Replicas of the Ducks' revised football jerseys will
be available for sale to the general public beginning
this afternoon at the University of Oregon Bookstore
(13th Ave. and Kincaid) and the Duck Shop (Moshofsky
Center), as well as in Autzen Stadium during Saturday's
Spring Game intrasquad scrimmage. Statewide distribution
through retail outlets is expected to be in place by the
first of next week.
