It’s
Official! New QMJHL Team to be called the Lewiston
MAINEiacs.
Lewiston, Maine (USA)-Today, officials of the USA’s
only Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) franchise
announced its new name, The Lewiston MAINEiacs at a city
hall news conference.
Vice President and Governor, Matt McKnight unveiled
the team nickname, logo, uniform and mascot, “Lewy” who
will represent the team at the rink and throughout the
community.
The logo features the initials “L” and “M” rendered
in blue and orange in the form of a fierce hockey
player. The team, currently known as the Sherbrooke
Castors, moves to Lewiston in August to take up
residence at the soon-to-be renovated Central Maine
Civic Center. Regular season play begins in September.
“We love The MAINEiacs,” McKnight said explaining
that the fierce, hockey-loving attitude represented by
the name was chosen from among 1,000 entries registered
at the team’s website,
www.lewistonhockey.com between mid-February and
March 31, 2003.
“It’s got attitude, and it really fits the incredible
spirit we’ve seen here in Lewiston/Auburn. The name not
only possesses a strong youth appeal and marketability,
but also provides a strong regional identity,” McKnight
said.
The MAINEiacs join the QMJHL, the primary development
league for the National Hockey League.
