CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Marlins will be back with a
touch more black for the 2003 season. At their annual
BBWAA awards banquet on Friday night, the Marlins
unveiled five new uniforms that feature black as a
primary color instead of teal.
"I like the black," All-Star third baseman Mike
Lowell said. "It adds a little oomph to the uniforms. As
long as we win, it's a good uniform."
In an active off-season, the Marlins made a number of
roster changes that has the team confident it will
contend in the gritty National League East. Now, they
are making a fashion statement.
Florida will sport three different home jerseys, with
the primary one being white with black pinstripes
(instead of teal) and "Marlins" scripted across the
front. The alternate home is white with black pinstripes
and the team logo on the left.
The third home jersey is black with "Marlins"
scrolled across the front with white pinstripe pants.
The primary road jersey is solid gray with Florida
across the front. The alternate uniform is a black
jersey with gray pants.
"Yeah, it is glittery, but we are in the
entertainment industry," Lowell said.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria wanted the new uniforms
to reflect a toughness he expects from the team.
Therefore, there is some more silver and black.
"It wasn't a matter of what's en vogue," Loria said.
"It's a matter of what looks good on a club. It's a
little more of a hard-nosed look."
Lowell, closer Braden Looper, catcher Pudge
Rodriguez, center fielder Juan Pierre and second baseman
Luis Castillo modeled the jerseys before the gathering
of 200.
