Rio Grande Valley Killer BeesThe buzz Wednesday evening was the unveiling of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bee logo and the team colors, teal with yellow and black accents during a press conference at The Embassy Suites in McAllen.

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees was chosen as the most popular team name during a myrgv.com sponsored contest in October that drew more than 1,200 responses from Valley residents hoping to win a $500 cash prize and season tickets for the most creative team name that represented an identifiable Valley icon.

Other finalist names included the Conquistadors, The Revolution, Southern Freeze and The River Hawks.

Although many Valley residents selected the Killer Bee as the team logo, a drawing determined the winners of a $500 cash prize were students at Valley View North Elementary School in Pharr, who chose the Killer Bee as the logo because of the Hidalgo Killer Bee statue located near their school.

"We were very pleasantly surprised that we won," said Rosemary Maciel of Valley View North Elementary in Pharr. "Because of (the bee's) fierceness, they are hoping that the team will be a fierce competitor as well."

Rio Grande Valley Killer BeesThe money will be spent on beautifying the school grounds, Maciel said.

"Hockey is very successful in Texas, " said president and general manager of the Rio Grande Valley Professional Hockey Club, Ltd., Trey Medlock. "This bodes well for turning the Valley into an entertainment area."

While a certain percentage of stadium sales is expected to be generated by hockey, during the off-season, the multi-purpose facility will be able to generate sales from concerts and events such as tradeshows, boxing, figure skating and adult and youth hockey.

"We aren't here just to sell hockey," Medlock said. The objective is to create an entertainment hub for the community.

Hockey season tickets will range from $400 to $704 and "Ice Packs" or partial season tickets will be sold ranging around $160 for 10 games or $256 for 16 games.

The hiring process for ticket and corporate sales positions will begin in January.
