Jacksonville Suns Unveil New Logo

It's a warm, smiling, friendly new mascot that the
Jacksonville Suns unveiled as part of their new logo for
the 2003 season.
Now if only the Suns and city officials could reach
the same relationship with regards to the lease for the
new ballpark.
More than 1,000 entries were submitted to the Suns in
recent months as part of a contest to give the team a
new logo, replacing the one the team has used the past
12 years.
Bill Stanford, a graphic designer from Hughesville,
Pa., designed the new Suns logo and was awarded a prize
of $3,000 for his winning effort.
"We're moving into a brand new ballpark and we wanted
to get new uniforms, so, as staff, we agreed that we
should have a new logo as well," said Peter Bragan, Jr.,
Suns vice president and general manager. "Of the
thousands of entries we received from all over the
country, this one just had a little playfulness about
it. It's going to give us a new character, too, so now
Southpaw will have a new sidekick.
"I'm really excited about this new look and the new
ballpark. I've been over there a lot and it's looking
good."
What is not moving as well however, is the lease
between the city and the Suns. Negotiations have been
under way for six months, but the sides have yet to
reach agreement.
"It's an ongoing process and we're making our best
conscientious effort to get a deal done," Bragan said.
The Suns are scheduled to play their first game at
the new park on April 11, 2003 against the Huntsville
Stars.
