San Francisco 49ers Unveil Throwback Jerseys
When
the 49ers take the field Monday Night against the Eagles
they will be turning back the clock. Equipment manager
Kevin Lartique and his staff were tasked with the job of
compiling the jersey’s which will mimic those of the
great 49ers teams of the 1980’s.
“We’ve gone back in the archives and looked at some
of the old media guides. We’ve talked to a couple of the
old players who were here back then,” said Lartique. “I
talked to a couple of companies like Rydell, who gave me
some history on how many times they’ve had to paint it
and when the colors change. And others told me about the
face mask changes. What we’ve got basically is a look
that resembles what they wore in the eighties.”
In an unprecedented run from 1981-90, the 49ers won
112 games, highlighted by nine trips to the playoffs,
six appearances in the NFC Championship game, four NFC
titles and victories in Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII and
XXIV. The 49ers sent 54 players to the Pro Bowl over the
same period and ultimately sent two players (Joe Montana
and Ronnie Lott) - and one coach (Bill Walsh) - to the
Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Orders for the jerseys were actually placed by
Lartique during the summer, but the uniforms did not
arrive until last week. Since then it’s been a well
orchestrated scramble for ‘Tique’ and his crew to fit 53
players for the new jerseys while still concentrating on
a road trip to San Diego.
“You know the hardest part has actually been fitting
the guys for the new helmets,” added Lartique. “They’ve
been in the same one since April so it’s broken in and
comfortable and the new helmets require quite a few
adjustments. But the guys have been great. They know
it’s just for one game.”
