Cleveland Cavaliers to Unveil New Team Colors
Today
On July 30, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced that
they would be changing the official team colors, logo
and uniforms, beginning with the 2003-04 season. Today,
the first step in that process will be unveiled, as
Cavaliers Chairman Gordon Gund will present the new team
colors at a press conference at Gund Arena.
"Over the past few years, we've been working hard to
get the Cavs' performance back to where we know it
should be," said Gund. "While our focus has been on
developing the team, we have also spent a lot of time
changing other aspects of our organization.
"Now that we feel we are headed in a new direction,
with exciting young players and a new feeling of
anticipation, we feel that the time is right to consider
a new look for the team -- new colors and perhaps new
uniforms and a new logo. We're going to start with the
colors."
This past summer, fans had the opportunity go to
cavs.com, to find a selection of color combinations.
Fans participated in overwhelming numbers and indicated
their favorite choice on-line. As fans made their pick,
they also entered a sweepstakes, featuring a grand prize
of the first new Cavs uniform jersey. The winner will be
announced next week.
The Cavaliers will also sport a new logo and uniforms
starting in 2003-04, and those designs will be disclosed
during the summer of 2003.
The team's colors were wine and gold from the
inaugural season in 1970-71 through 1982-83. They were
then changed to burnt orange, white and royal blue for
the 1983-84 season. Either orange or a shade of blue has
been the team's primary color since then. Prior to the
1994-95 season, the emphasis was switched to royal blue,
burnt orange and white. A logo change took place for the
1994-95 season, the Cavs' first season at Gund Arena.
The current colors are blue, black and orange.
