San Angelo Saints general manager Daniel Chaput isn’t
a theology major, but he did have an interesting theory
as he unveiled the team’s new black, gold and silver
logo.
As the crowd assembled at the press conference looked
over the logo, which features a dusty cowboy sporting a
halo and wielding his hockey stick upside down like a
sword, Chaput offered an observation.
“It’s based off St. Michael,’’ Chaput explained.
“Most pictures of him, he’s seen with a sword stabbing
the devil. We have a West Texas version of that.
“If St. Michael lived in San Angelo, that’s how he’d
look.”
Curtis Hensley of Curtis Sign Company provided the
basic outline and theme of the logo, which had to be
approved by the New Orleans Saints of the NFL.
Merchandise with the new logo may be available at the
Outlaws office within a week, and Chaput guaranteed it
would be available at the exhibition game against Odessa
next Friday.
“I couldn’t have come up with it better,’’ Coach
Brent Scott said. “I was frustrated, it took a long time
to get it done, but I’m happy with what we came up with.
I don’t know if there are any saints in San Angelo, but
we are proud of our logo, proud of our owners and proud
of the team.”
“It’s different,” Chaput said. “It still captures
West Texas, it captures the team.’’
The cowboy doesn’t have a name, though Chaput
predicted one will come up naturally.
The team also announced that game tickets for the
upcoming season will go on sale Monday at the Convention
Center ticket office. Prices are $16 for box seats, $10
for mid-zone and $5 for end zone. The exhibition game is
free for season-ticket holders and half-price for anyone
bringing three non-perishable food items.
The regular season opens at home on Oct. 18 against
El Paso.
