East Coast Hockey League - Charlotte Checkers
Charlotte Checkers Unveil New Logo, Colors
When the puck drops on a new season of Charlotte
Checkers hockey at Cricket Arena on Friday, October
11th, the team will sport an updated logo and new
uniforms featuring the touch of nationally renowned
clothing designer Alexander Julian.
The newly designed logo features a leaner, meaner,
more colorful polar bear mascot dressed in red and blue,
a departure from the orange and blue worn by the
Checkers since their return to Charlotte in 1993.
"We wanted a fresh logo to match our fresh start and
reinforce our theme for this season, 'Back At Full
Strength,'" commented Checkers CEO Carl Scheer. "This is
a logo that stands out as the Checkers continue to build
on a long history and tradition in Charlotte."
Scheer and Checkers Chairman Felix Sabates originally
owned the East Coast Hockey League franchise from
1993-96 and reacquired the team in May of this year.
The updated logo and new uniforms solidify the
commitment of Charlotte Businessmen Scheer and Sabates,
along with partner co-owners Steve Luquire (Luquire
George Andrews, Inc.) Mark Richardson (Carolina
Panthers), and South Carolina businessman Jerry Zucker
to bring new excitement and an enhanced game experience
to energize the always-loyal Checkers supporters and
attract new fans.
Luquire George Andrews, Charlotte's leading
advertising and public relations agency, designed the
logo for the Checkers' rebirth in 1993 and also created
the new look for 2002.
The 36-home game Checkers regular season opens on
October 11th vs. the Greenville Grrrowl, a team for
which Carl Scheer also serves as CEO.
