U. of North Carolina Unveils New Football
Uniforms
Uniform features more Carolina Blue and a thinner
dark blue trim.
Although just slightly different from last year, the
2002 University of North Carolina football uniforms mark
a return to the look of the 1970s and 1980s, with more
"Carolina Blue" throughout the uniform. The wide dark
blue trim that was added in the 1990s has been changed
to a thinner trim and the helmet is a slightly darker
tint with a metallic finish.
The uniform is similar in color to the uniform head
coach John Bunting wore as a linebacker for the Tar
Heels in the early 1970s.
Last season, Bunting eliminated the dark blue outline
around the interlocking NC that appeared on the helmet.
"In my opinion, the Carolina uniform is the best in
the country," said Bunting. "Carolina Blue is a unique
color and I wanted to emphasize that color in the
uniform and eliminate some of the dark blue from last
year's design. I think our fans will be happy with the
uniform and I know our team will be excited to wear them
for the first time on August 31 against Miami (Ohio)."
Through the years the Carolina football uniform has
undergone a number of changes. Below are photos of the
uniform beginning with (l-r) Don McCauley in 1970,
Lawrence Taylor in 1980, Chris Keldorf in 1997 and
Julius Peppers in 2001.
