EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trappers announced the
introduction of a new logo and team colours, beginning
in the 2001 season. “With the new millennium, the change
in ownership, and new affiliation with the Minnesota
Twins, we felt this was the right time for a fresh
look,” said Trappers’ General Manager Mel Kowalchuk.
The development of the new uniforms began in late
1999, shortly after Minor League Baseball approved the
Edmonton Eskimos’ ownership bid. Many designs were also
considered before settling on the final version, a more
traditional look reflecting baseball’s themes and
traditions. Local graphics artist Dean McLeod of LGI
Digital & Fine Art Printing created the final design.
The new green and gold colours primarily reflect the
Trappers’ community-ownership by the Eskimo Football
Club. A maple leaf is also prominently featured and
acknowledges the Trappers as one of only two Canadian
teams in the Pacific Coast League. Together the colours
and maple leaf also symbolize the link between the
Trappers and the scenic river valley location of TELUS
Field. “Green and gold is synonymous with Edmonton’s
great sports teams including the Eskimos and the
University of Alberta’s varsity teams, ” said President
Hugh Campbell. “I’m proud that the Edmonton Trappers
will be joining a rich history of excellence.”
This is the fourth time the Trappers have modified
their team colours and logo since their inception in
1981. “Our previous changes reflected our affiliations
at the time with the California Angels and the Florida
Marlins. This time, it is more about the Trappers’
identity in Edmonton than our affiliation with the
Minnesota Twins,” said Kowalchuk.
The jerseys will feature the “Trappers” logo
inscribed on the front. On the road, the team will sport
gray uniforms while the home version will feature a
white jersey with white pants. In all cases, the cap
worn will be green and feature the stylized “E” symbol.
The numbers on each jersey will be green with gold trim
for ease of readability. In addition, Trapper fans will
also see an alternate green home jersey worn with the
white pants.
Trapper fans and collectors should note that an
all-new array of baseball caps, apparel, and replica
jerseys will be available for sale by the beginning of
the season. The Edmonton Trappers 2001 campaign begins
on the road April 5 against the Memphis Redbirds. Local
fans will get their first look at the Trappers when they
open the home part of the schedule on April 13 against
the Sacramento River Cats. Tickets go on-sale March 26,
2001 at TELUS Field, charge-by-phone 451-8000, or at any
TicketMaster outlet.
