March, 2008:

  • Atlanta Braves Unveil New Alternate Uniform (Major League Baseball/National League)
    March 31, 2008
The Braves surprised their players by presenting them the team's new alternate jerseys just before the start of Sunday night's season opener against the Nationals at new Nationals Park. About 45 minutes before meeting with President George W. Bush, Braves players found their new blue-on-blue jerseys sitting in their lockers. The matching hats were navy blue with the club's white scripted "A". "It was a surprise," Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur said. "They were pretty cool." "We feel that we have one of the classic uniforms in all of baseball," Braves president John Schuerholz said in a statement. "Our new road jersey and navy cap are perfect representations of Braves baseball. They are emblematic of the traditional style of Braves uniforms over the years."

  • Minnesota Thunder and Minnesota Lightning Unveil New Logos, Uniforms (United Soccer League, W-League)
    March 26, 2008
The Minnesota Thunder and Minnesota Lightning unveiled new logos, uniforms and introduced the team’s new attitude on Wednesday. The teams are looking to make the fan an integral part of the game. Fans will notice more interactive in-game promotions and an increased commitment to service and fan amenities. In August 2007 St. Paul-native Dean Johnson acquired the Minnesota Thunder and Lightning franchises. In addition to enhanced fan experiences, Johnson is committed to bringing championship soccer back to Minnesota. The Minnesota Thunder is entering its 19th season in the United Soccer League. The teams’ previous success on the field, a record of 335-174-64, looks to continue under the new ownership. The Lightning’s record stands at 19-4-3 after two seasons with playoff berths in both years.

  • Indianapolis Colts Announce Contest for Fans to Design Secondary Logo (National Football League)
    March 26, 2008
The Colts’ primary logo long has been a blue horseshoe. It’s among the NFL’s most recognizable, most enduring, and it won’t change. But starting soon, it will have some more company. And fans will have the chance to determine just what that company is. The Colts on Wednesday announced their “Design a Horse” contest, in which fans are invited to create a logo of a horse that is unique, versatile and fun. The Colts will use the winning design as a secondary logo to complement existing logos. Five finalists will be chosen and their submitted logo will be posted on Colts.com for fans to vote for a grand prize winner. The grand prize includes two lower level season tickets for the inaugural season at Lucas Oil Stadium plus $1,000. All designs submitted should incorporate a youthful hose that is “playful yet strong,” and which should appeal to Colts fans. A hard copy printout of the logo must be included with each entry. All logo images must be submitted on a CD in both EPS and JPEG format along with a completed registration form. The grand prize winner will be selected through a fan vote on Colts.com and announced April 26 at the Colts’ annual Draft Day Party. In addition, the Colts may use the winning logo on apparel and all other Colts marketing materials. Fans interested in submitting a logo should go to www.colts.com/designahorse for a registration form and complete list of guidelines.

  • New York Yankees Unveil Yankee Stadium Commemorative Logo (Major League Baseball/American League)
    March 25, 2008
The New York Yankees announced today that the team will wear a special patch on their 2008 uniforms commemorating the final season of Yankee Stadium. In addition, the team will also don a patch in honor of the 2008 All-Star Game that will take place at Yankee Stadium on July 15, 2008. It is the first time the club's uniforms will be adorned with a patch for a full season since 2003, when the Yankees wore a patch commemorating the 100th anniversary of the franchise. The "Yankee Stadium-The Final Season" patch will feature the main entrance of the original Stadium as it was prior to renovation in 1976. A "1923-2008" notation along the top of the patch recognizes the lifetime of the Stadium since its original Opening Day on April 18, 1923. In an effort to be closest to the heart, the Yankee Stadium patch will be worn on the left sleeves of both home and road jerseys. The 2008 All-Star Game patch will appear on the right sleeves of both jerseys.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "MLB Preview"
    March 25, 2008
For a good decade or so, Uni Watch has been hearing the same plea from baseball fans of a certain age: "When are powder blue road uniforms coming back?" they ask. "Those were the coolest!" Take heart, you '70s and '80s nostalgists, for Uni Watch has excellent news for you: Powder blues (a phenomenon Uni Watch explored in depth three summers ago) are returning to MLB diamonds this year -- sort of. Fact is, fans have been clamoring for certain teams to revive their powder blues for years now, and several teams have been eager to accommodate them. But they've always faced the same problem: What's the point of having a fan-pleasing design that you can only wear on the road?

  • Las Vegas 51s to Change Nickname for 2009 (Pacific Coast League (baseball))
    March 24, 2008
Like a moonshot sailing out of Cashman Field, the alien logo and team name of the Las Vegas 51s will be sent back to outer space next season by the ballclub's new owners. The city's 25-year-old Triple-A baseball franchise will wear new blue hats, bearing a raised blue-and-white LV on the bill, at times this year, and the team will take on a new name after this season. "We're the 51s for the 2008 season, but after that, I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the 51s name," said Derek Stevens, CEO of the Stevens Baseball Group, which bought the franchise from Mandalay Baseball Properties in a deal approved last week. "We want to come up with another name, and that's something we'd like to target for the 2009 season." Stevens said he plans to let the public pick the new name. Some changes will be made this year, said Stevens, who will be introduced to the media at a news conference today at Cashman Field. Among them are a new scoreboard featuring a 15-by-36-foot video board, and a new left-field party deck that can accommodate 100 people and has its own bar.

    March 20, 2008

  • Iowa Barnstormers Unveil Uniforms (arenafootball2)
    March 19, 2008
Keeping one of the most unique and recognizable helmets in professional sports, team officials today announced the 2008 Iowa Barnstormers will return to the field wearing the iconic “goggle style” helmets made popular by the arena football club’s initial run in the 1990s. Barnstormers President Jeff Lamberti also noted that the Barnstormers game jerseys have been modernized, but were done so in a manner consistent with Barnstormers tradition, as the original “wings” feature on the upper chest of the jersey has been updated on both the home and road uniforms. “This gives our athletes a big league look that both retains the spirit of the original Barnstormers wings and does so in first-class style,” said Lamberti. The Barnstormers home jersey is solid black with gold numbers and gold lettering with red trim around the collar and sleeves. The jersey “wings” feature is present in the gold along the upper arm and sleeve. The Barnstormers road jersey is white with black numbers and black lettering with red trim around the collar and sleeves. On the road jersey, the “wings” feature is present in gold along the entire length of the shoulders.

  • Arkansas State U. Unveils New Nickname, Athletic Marks (NCAA)
    March 13, 2008
The wait is over. Today at 11 a.m. on the east side of the Student Union, a roll-out ceremony for Arkansas State University’s newly adopted mascot, the Red Wolves, revealed the new face of ASU athletics. The decision to bid farewell to ASU’s Indians and Indian Family was not an easy one, but it was a collaborative decision at every level. The decision-making process was begun about a year ago in response to NCAA sanctions. First, the Mascot Review Committee went to work last spring, eventually returning a recommendation that the university needed to change its mascot. ASU Chancellor Dr. Robert L. Potts then appointed a Mascot Selection Steering Committee, which gathered ideas for a mascot change from an extremely broad-based constituency that included students, alumni, student athletes, athletic administration, and members of the community. Jim Pickens, emeritus member of the Board of Trustees, was appointed committee chair to oversee the process and keep it representative of all constituencies.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Spring Training Gear"
    March 13, 2008
Here's something you don't see very often: Vlad Guerrero wearing a clean batting helmet, instead of his usual gunked-up model. Spring training is full of uni-related sights you won't see anywhere else, whether it's unseemly uniform numbers, a Hall of Fame legend wearing an embarrassingly undignified cap, or John Daly looking svelte (well, comparatively speaking). So forget about all the regular-season uniform changes that are in the offing -- Uni Watch will deal with those next time around. For now, let's just stick with the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues.

  • Northern League Unveils 2008 All-Star Game Logo (Northern League (baseball))
    March 6, 2008
The hosts of one of the best Northern League All-Star Games in history are preparing to do so again. Speaking during a news conference at McPhillips Street Station on January 23, Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier unveiled plans for the 2008 Northern League All-Star Celebrations. Presented by the Casinos of Winnipeg, the league’s annual gathering of its elite will take place Monday, July 7 & Tuesday, July 8 at Canwest Park. “It’s a pleasure to partner with the Casinos of Winnipeg on an event that will once again focus the Northern League spotlight on Winnipeg and showcase the best players to the best fans in baseball,” said Collier. “With what we’ve lined up and what we have to confirm, what was good about our first all-star game will be even better this time.” Winnipeg last hosted the event in 2001, the first time it was held over two days since the inaugural all-star game in St. Paul in 1997. Hosting it this year will be especially meaningful, with it being the club’s tenth season at Canwest Park and fifteenth overall in the Northern League.
