August, 2007:

  • Charlotte Bobcats to Unveil Revamped Marketing Campaign (National Basketball Association)
    August 31, 2007
No, the Charlotte Bobcats aren't playing hard to get. But when the team launches its totally revamped marketing campaign next month, it will no longer be making a hard sell on tickets. Instead, the franchise, which has spent three years and millions of dollars pushing ticket packages, will focus on building an entirely new image. "We understand what the (Carolina) Panthers have been able to achieve, what NASCAR has been able to achieve and what the Hornets achieved in terms of making a real connection to the city," says Greg Economou, Bobcats chief marketing officer. "It's fair to say we haven't done that yet. That's partly because we're so young and partly because we need to do a better job defining ourselves."

  • NFL to Revamp Shield With Redesigned Logo (National Football League)
    August 30, 2007
The National Football League is launching a makeover of its red, white and blue "NFL Shield" logo that adorns everything from player jerseys to fan T-shirts and hats. The league is creating a leaner, meaner version of the iconic logo that will debut at the NFL draft in April, 2008. The revamped shield will be slightly taller and thinner, with a new football, fewer stars and darker colors, says Lisa Baird, the NFL's senior vice president of marketing. The redesign marks the first changes to the shield since 1980. At the NFL's annual meeting this spring, commissioner Roger Goodell talked about the NFL Shield as the "envy of the sports world." The league has been careful to make an "evolutionary, not a radical change," says Baird.

  • Vancouver Canucks Unveil New Logos, Colors, Uniforms (National Hockey League)
    August 29, 2007
Today the Vancouver Canucks unveiled their new home and away sweaters for the 2007-08 season in front of thousands of fans at General Motors Place. At a mid-day media conference Canucks fans saw five of their favourite players, Markus Naslund, Trevor Linden, Mattias Ohlund, Willie Mitchell and Kevin Bieksa skate onto the General Motors Place ice in their full home blue and road white uniforms for the first time. The combination of the original blue, green and white colouring, along with the Orca Whale celebrates the past and present in Canucks history. The new Canucks home uniform is primarily blue with classic horizontal green and white stripes, reflective of the Canucks first NHL season of 1970 and symbolic of BC’s natural landscape. The original stick and rink mark has evolved, yet maintains its simplicity and connection to the game of hockey, while providing more definition to the Canuck 'C’. It is featured on each of the shoulders of both the home and away sweaters. The front of the sweater is adorned with the familiar Orca Whale, a true reflection of the west coast of British Columbia.

  • Saskatchewan Roughriders Unveil Retro Uniforms (Canadian Football League)
    August 27, 2007
The Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club is pleased to announce they have officially launched their retro jersey. The replica jerseys are now available exclusively in the Rider store at Mosaic Stadium and Northgate Mall. It was back in 1948 when the Roughriders donned the Green and White for the first time. At the time, the team was in bad need of uniforms when an executive member of the club found a set of green and white jerseys at a surplus store in Chicago. For pure economic reasons the legacy of the green and white was born. The team wore the original colours until 1985 when the Roughriders updated their look one more time by adding black and silver to the green & white and featuring a new stylized "S" logo.

  • Tampa Bay Lightning Unveil New Logos, Uniforms (National Hockey League)
    August 25, 2007

The Lightning logo, which has undergone changes for the first time since the franchise’s inception in 1992, can be seen along with photos of the new home and away jerseys at www.tampabaylightning.com. The updated Lightning logo is a modernization of the team’s classic lightning bolt with the contrast of black surrounding the bolt and the insertion of blue into the bolt’s interior to empower the logo’s impact. A new, custom typeface with angled letters is used for “TAMPA BAY”, while “LIGHTNING” has been dropped from the logo. These changes were made to provide a bold and unified icon. The secondary logo delivers a seamless transition into the refreshed shoulder patch featuring, featuring the state of Florida’s shape as the backdrop against the newly defined Tampa Bay Lightning bolt. The foreground is the focal point, encapsulating the team’s support across the state.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "One and Done"
    August 23, 2007
Last week's column about uniform prototypes led many Uni Watch readers to point out an omission -- or at least that's what they thought it was: "What about the Mavericks' metallic uniforms?" they wrote. "They were worn only once and then taken out of circulation." True, the Mavs' silver ensemble remains a landmark in uni-related missteps. The thing is, that design doesn't qualify as a prototype, because it was actually worn in a regular-season game. It does, however, serve as the definitive example of another category, which makes a worthy follow-up to our prototype investigation: uniforms that were worn just a handful of times (or, as in the Mavs' case, just once) and then abandoned. Call it one and done.

  • Cleveland State U. Unveils New Athletics Spirit Marks (NCAA)
    August 22, 2007
A two-year process to update the Cleveland State athletic spirit marks and logos came to a completion on Wednesday (Aug. 22) when CSU Director of Athletics Lee Reed unveiled a new graphics package for Viking athletics. As part of the unveiling, a complete line of apparel went on sale this morning at the CSU Bookstore, which is located at 2400 Euclid Ave. "Today's unveiling is the culmination of almost two years of planning," Reed said. "We examined how our marks were being used and how they could be updated to reflect a more modern looking image that better represents our student-athletes." The primary athletic mark, nicknamed "Peering Viking", consists of the upper half of a Viking head -- from the bridge of the nose on up -- peering out over the words Cleveland State, which is printed in the font Friz Quadrata. The focal point of the design is the heavy emphasis on the aggressive stare of the Viking, mostly coming from the strong eyes under the helmet.

  • New York Islanders Unveil New Uniforms (National Hockey League)
    August 16, 2007
In fashion, you are either in or out. This apparently applies to the garb of sports teams, too, as the Islanders yesterday announced a brand new jersey and ousted their beloved old shirt, which has been around for close to a decade. It's not exactly that the team wanted a new shirt. In fact, the Islanders' reputation for changing uniforms is a bit tainted, after the famously reviled fisherman logo (it had a resemblance to a famous seafood label) that surfaced in 1995 and sunk like a lead weight in 1996. This time around the change is a mandate from the National Hockey League. Every team in the league is getting a fashion makeover. "The League sat down and brainstormed about what would be the biggest improvement for the game and the uniform was first and foremost," said Keith Leach, director of NHL Uniforms for Reebok, the company responsible for the overhaul. The new jersey debuts on the ice at Nassau Coliseum on Sept. 24 when the Islanders play the Rangers. It's the sixth different sweater since the team's inception in 1972. Reportedly, the result of two years of Reebok research it incorporates the company's "Edge" system, which offers lighter, more breathable fabric that allows for a greater range of movement, and two new technologies -- Bead Away and Playdry -- which wick away moisture, providing for a significantly drier jersey over 60 sweaty minutes.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Archives of History Reveal Failed Uni Designs"
    August 16, 2007
In 1991, San Francisco 49ers owner Ed DeBartolo and team president Carmen Policy held a press conference where they announced, among other things, that the team would have a new helmet design. Fan response was swift, and not particularly pleasant. The very next day, the team issued a statement that essentially amounted to, "Um, never mind," and the new helmet was quietly withdrawn (although it was later immortalized as a mini-helmet toy). A similar situation unfolded five years later in St. Louis, where the Blues were getting ready to unveil a new alternate uniform that was just a little bit out there. But fans didn't get a chance to respond to this design. When head coach Mike Keenan got a peek at the jersey, he promptly put the kibosh on it.

  • SignOnSanDiego.com - "A Fashion Misstatement"
    August 15, 2007
You know Brazil wears yellow jerseys. You know Italy and France wear blue, that England and Germany wear white, that Mexico wears green, that the Dutch wear orange, that Portugal wears maroon, that Argentina wears light blue and white vertical stripes, that Paraguay wears red and white vertical stripes. But what color does the U.S. national soccer team predominantly wear? Red? Correct. White? Correct. Blue? Correct. Gold? Correct. It is one of those issues that either elicits a shrug among U.S. fans or an impassioned, expletive-filled, spit-flying-out-of-the-sides-of-the-mouth diatribe about it being the embodiment of everything that's wrong with the sport in this country.

  • Ottawa Senators to Unveil New Logos, Uniforms on August 22 (National Hockey League)
    August 14, 2007
The Senators logos are apparently going to get a little nip and tuck. When the Senators unveil their new uniforms a week from Wednesday, it's expected the Centurion who is the centrepiece of the logo will have undergone a little cosmetic surgery. According to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office website, Eugene Melnyk's Capital Sports & Entertainment Inc., applied July 10 for two new, updated Senators logos. The logos, in the trade-marks database, are filed under "forward-facing Senator (man knight) logo," which is an updated version of the logo introduced on what was the Senators' third jersey (now their regular uniform) and "Senator profile (man knight) logo," which brings a cleaner look to the Senators original logo. In the latter logo, the Centurian's flowing cape has been tailored, giving the logo a more balanced look.

  • Tulane U. Unveils New Men's Football Uniforms (NCAA)
    August 11, 2007
On the day of the first practice of the 2007 Tulane football season, the Green Wave showed off its new look. Prior to the new offense installed under new head coach Bob Toledo, being showcased on the field, the new Tulane uniforms were on display as the players posed for team pictures and met with the media Saturday at the James W. Wilson Center. "It's an exciting time for all of us," Toledo said during his address to the media in the Hall of Fame room. "We've so much fun since we've been here in January. We are very anxious to get started. We start this afternoon, we took pictures this morning. I think if you talk to our players they're anxious to get started as well." • Detroit Red Wings Unveil New Uniforms (National Hockey League)
    August 10, 2007
The Detroit Red Wings are one of the first NHL teams to unveil their newly redesigned and technologically-advanced Reebok Edge jerseys for the 2007-08 season. The remodeled new jerseys offer a lighter, more breathable material that allows for a greater range of movement. The system was developed through more than two years of extensive research, development and testing with player feedback being integral to the process – especially from direct on-ice product testing. There are a couple of minor changes with the new Reebok Edge styling. The white stripe at the bottom of the home jersey seems a tad thicker and the red stripe on the away jersey looks a bit lower. One thing that I thought they would add is the laced collar, that appears to not be the case. One thing I don't like is on the back of each jersey there is a big Reebok logo on the top of the back. Overall I am happy and have to admit I was a huge skeptic of the new Reebok Edge jersey's but my fears are going away since the Wings jersey is essentially the same look. I was also really relieved after viewing the New York Rangers jersey and keeping to its Original Six theme.

The second logo will be the same as the first, although there will be a white banner in front with the words "5th Anniversary" and the years on each side, 2003-2008. The Eagles will be wearing new jerseys only for the 2007-08 season; a white home jersey, a black road jersey and a red alternate jersey. Following the All-Star Break the home and road jerseys will switch in order for fans at the Budweiser Events Center to see all three jerseys.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Breaking the Law, Breaking the Law"
    August 3, 2007
With uniforms, as with so many other things, there are rules. But sometimes the players don't follow those rules, which can lead to a warning letter, a fine, or yet another fine. Until last week, however, Uni Watch had never heard of a team forfeiting a game due to a uniform violation. This new landmark in sartorial adjudication took place on July 24, when two American Legion baseball teams were forced to forfeit their first-round games in the Washington State Division IV District Tournament -- after they had already won those games (in one case by a score of 14-0) -- because the American Legion logo was screen-printed onto their sleeves instead of sewn on as the Legion's rules require.

A Lynx paw was added to give the new logo a bit more of an edge. The phrase ‘A Decade of Hockey’ is included to highlight the meaning and purpose behind this special logo that will be used by the Lynx during the 2007-08 season.

"We're very excited about our relationship with adidas," said Boylen. "The way they've treated us so far is an awesome statement about their commitment to University of Utah men's basketball. The products and service they've provided to us are first-rate. We are thankful for our relationship with adidas. As we grow this program, we look forward to having adidas come along with us for the ride." The new uniforms will feature an all crimson and white look. In past years, black had been used as an accent color on uniforms, although the official school colors are crimson and white. In addition to the color scheme, Utah's uniforms will have several other notable differences from the past.
