  • Florida Panthers Unveil New Uniforms (National Hockey League)
    July 28, 2007
Panthers centers Stephen Weiss and Nathan Horton took the ice during the first intermission of Saturday’s “Year of the Rat” alumni game to model the new Reebok uniforms the team will be sporting this season. The NHL and Reebok spent more than two years designing and testing the new uniforms that all 30 teams will wear this season. Called the Rbk Edge Uniform System, the new uniforms are lighter and feature breathable, moisture repellent fabrics that keep players drier. They are tighter and more durable with the aim of improving both player performance and safety. The Panthers’ logo is larger and the jerseys feature vertical piping on the chest and sleeves. Weiss, who wore the blue road uniform, said he likes how the uniforms feel. “They’re different. They feel a little lighter,” he said pointing out the tighter shin pads. “Hopefully it brings us some luck.”

  • U. of Kansas to Modify Men's Football and Men's Basketball Uniforms for 2007 (NCAA)
    July 19, 2007
In a move to signal the soon-coming apocalypse, at least in the eyes of many KU fans, the athletic department plans to change the lettering on the front of the men’s basketball and football jerseys. It’s part of a unifying effort that started two years ago. The change should make all Jayhawk uniforms look…well, more uniform. Since 1991, the basketball jerseys have had three slight changes. Now the font on the jersey front gets a makeover. The color and overall look, they all stay the same. It’s just the old lettering — described by KU associate athletics director Jim Marchiony as a “circus font” — will change to trajan. It’s the same lettering that has been on the Jayhawk logo for two years. But not everybody is happy about it.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Behind the Scenes at the Epicenter of Lettering"
    June 19, 2007
When you see a uniform with the Reebok logo on the sleeve, you probably figure that Reebok manufactured and assembled every component of the jersey. But that's not how it usually works. Reebok, Nike and most of the other big uniform manufacturers, as well as retail-only brands like Mitchell & Ness, put the main garments together, but the letters, numbers, patches and sometimes the primary logo insignia are often created and applied by a subcontractor. And in many cases, that subcontractor is Liebe Athletic Lettering, located in Chesterfield, Mo., about half an hour outside of St. Louis. Founded as a basement operation about 80 years ago, Liebe now does work for all the major American sports leagues, the NCAA and loads of smaller athletic organizations. It gets no glory -- no logo on the garment, no tag, no indication that the uniform has passed through its factory. But whether you realize it or not, you see Liebe's work almost any time you watch a game on TV or flip through a rack of jerseys at Modell's.

  • San Jose Earthquakes to Return to MLS in 2008 (Major League Soccer)
    July 18, 2007
Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber today announced that the San Jose Earthquakes and the ownership group led by Lew Wolff and John Fisher will join the League and begin play in 2008. Wolff and Fisher are principle owners of the Oakland Athletic baseball club. The announcement was made during the Commissioner's State of the League address in Colorado prior to Thursday's Sierra Mist All-Star Game at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. "This is a momentous day in the maturation of Major League Soccer," Garber said. "One, because we are able to reward the soccer fans of the Bay Area for their patience and complete our commitment to return a team to them. Two, because it shows how much the sport's credibility has grown in just two years time. The Earthquakes now have a solid foundation on which to build. We are thrilled to have Lew and John join the MLS family. They are great sports team operators and understand the market. They have become deeply committed to bringing the Earthquakes back to the Bay Area and have been working tirelessly during the last few years to find a stadium solution that will work for the team, its fans and the community."

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "MLB's Biggest All-Star Mystery"
    July 12, 2007
The MLB All-Star Game is next week, which means uni-obsessed fans will be dusting off all the usual bits of uniform-related All-Star trivia, like the National League's special league insignia jerseys from 1933 (further info here), the many instances when misplaced equipment forced players to wear another team's batting helmet (several of which are listed here) or the odd All-Star habit of wearing white shoes. But Uni Watch has stumbled upon another All-Star aberration -- one that apparently has gone unnoticed for more than 70 years and has actively resisted all attempts to explain it. It's an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, covered in several square sheets of wool flannel.

The Galaxy unveiled their long-awaited and highly-anticipated new jersey and logo Thursday. Green has been replaced with collegiate navy and together with gold and white are now the colors that David Beckham will defend. "We wanted to create a classic and a clean look that would stand the test of time and ultimately something that generations of players and fans were going to wear with pride on and off the field," Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas said. "It was definitely a jersey with an eye to the future and a nod to the past and I think we were able to create something pretty special." The original logo - the recognizable swirling galaxy with the club's name splashed on the front - is now part of club lore. The new logo features a quasar prominently. Defined as the bright and distant center of a young galaxy, the quasar on the crest is white in the center, gold and blue on the exterior and hovers over white "LA" letters.

  • Missouri Southern State U. Unveils New Athletic Logos (NCAA)
    July 2, 2007
The Missouri Southern Athletics Department has announced a facelift. For the first time since the Lions began playing sports at the NCAA level, Southern has a new logo package. “We simply felt the time had come for a new look and a new identity,” said Athletics Director Sallie Beard. “Our identity as a department had become a bit fragmented. Some coaches used the old logo and some didn’t. Some had even come up with alternative logos. What we ultimately want is for our coaches and players to wear a unified logo that identifies them as Missouri Southern Lions. We know that this type of branding takes time, but we think we now have the logo that will allow us to achieve these goals.” The announcement capped off a process that has taken nearly two years. Local graphic artist A.J. Wood painted a roaring lion that was the inspiration for this logo. Wood then converted his original painting to a digitized version that could be used as a logo. Several focus group sessions were conducted to gather feedback, and some adjustments were made to Wood’s design. A final version was decided upon and presented to University President, Dr. Julio Leon for approval.

  • Memphis RiverKings Rename Team to "Mississippi RiverKings" (Central Hockey League)
    July 2, 2007
Maddox Hockey gave RiverKings hockey fans the opportunity to voice their opinion and that opinion has been heard. At a news conference at the DeSotoCivicCenter today, the RiverKings announced that the team will adopt “Mississippi RiverKings” as its new name beginning with the 2007-2008 season. “Not only does that reflect where we play now, but we feel that it also includes the entire region,” RiverKings Director of Business Operations Dave Mattice said at the news conference. “We think all of the choices have their own unique qualities and would have served the organization well. But, we are excited that the fans chose Mississippi. We think the Mississippi RiverKings is the best possible name for the future of the franchise.” The team was the “Memphis RiverKings” for the previous 15 seasons of playing hockey in the Mid-South. The RiverKings played their first eight seasons at the Mid South Coliseum in Memphis before moving to the DeSotoCivicCenter in 2000. The DCC has been the team’s home for the past seven Central Hockey League seasons. RiverKings Director of Business Operations Dave Mattice announced the results of the fan voting during the news conference. The choices that fans had to choose from during the almost month-long voting on the RiverKings’ website were to keep the name “Memphis RiverKings” or change to: “DeSoto RiverKings”; “Mid-South RiverKings”; “Mississippi RiverKings”; or “Southaven RiverKings.”
