  • Northwest Arkansas Naturals Unveil Logo (Texas League (baseball))
    May 30, 2007
The area's future Minor League Baseball team is building its home -- and on Tuesday it got a face to go with the stadium. Representatives of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, in front of more than 100 at the Tyson Park Pavilion in Springdale, unveiled the team's logo. It was designed around a theme of natural waterfalls in the area. "This is the announcement that we feel gives life to the franchise," said Eric Edelstein, Naturals general manager. "This is our identity that is being revealed." The logo was designed by graphic designer and Arkansas-native James Skiles of Phoenix Design Works in New York City. Phoenix Design currently has five logos in use in Major League Baseball, but the Naturals was the first for a minor league franchise.

  • Michigan State U. Unveils New Men's Football Uniforms (NCAA)
    May 26, 2007
The Michigan State football team will sport a new fashion look for the upcoming 2007 season. The new-look uniforms, manufactured by Nike, are made of a new more durable lightweight Cordura stretch material that is form-fitting for performance enhancement. The new material replaces the heavier knits of the past. Nike product line manager Alec Mattison outlines the main technical details of the new uniform:
    • innovative fit - The new jersey has an updated design and new performance fabrics, producing a tight shrink-wrapped fit that minimizes grab points for opponents to hang onto.
    • weight reduction - Both the jersey and pant are made of lighter weight material.
    • increased ventilation - A light-weight mesh has been added in areas that have traditionally been covered by non-breathable fabrics, like the upper back neck and under arms where heat can escape.
    • improved moisture management - Both the jersey and pant are produced with Nike's most technical uniform fabrics that hold far less moisture, thus carrying less weight. This is a very significant feature, especially in the game pants.

  • Bakersfield Condors Unveil Special 10th Anniversary Season Logos (ECHL (hockey))
    May 24, 2007
The Bakersfield Condors Professional Hockey Team unveiled their 10th Anniversary Season logos today, which will be used leading up to and during the 2007-08 season. The Condors primary logo used since their inception in 1998 will still remain in use, as well as some of the alternate logos that have been created over the years. However, the 10th Anniversary logos will be the focal point. "We like logos, so when the voting came up pretty even for two of the original options, we decided to incorporate versions of both of them," Condors President Matthew Riley said. "Two of the 10th Anniversary logos we'll use are very similar to our traditional logo, with slight color changes and adding Roman numeral 10 behind it. We feel the logo with the Condors claw clutching onto the Roman numeral 10 is more contemporary and hip and gives us a lot of versatility." Condors Director of Creative Services Ryan Hanson is primarily responsible for the development of the logos, along with input from many others, including the fans who were allowed to voice their opinion on the new logos and pick their favorite out of four possible designs. Voting for the new logos started Dec. 22 and ran through Jan. 15 at all Condors home games and online during that period. Fans who voted for the new logos that were selected were entered into a random drawing to win a Condors 10th Anniversary Prize Pack. The 10th Anniversary Contest winner was season ticket holder Kim Morris.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Who Knew Garciaparra Played For The Angels?"
    May 24, 2007
By now, most people realize that Nomar Garciaparra is a creature of habit -- often very strange habits. Even the casual fan is aware that Nomar obsessively fidgets with his batting gloves and does that little shuffle in the batter's box. Slightly more serious fans have long noted his penchant for wearing mismatched sweatbands -- usually black on his lower left forearm and red on his upper right forearm. And if you're a truly hardcore observer, you may have noticed the time he wore adidas shoes with a Reebok tongue, an unprecedented bit of footwear Frankenstein-ism that still leaves Uni Watch marveling in disbelief.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Whoa, Did He Really Wear THAT?"
    May 11, 2007
It's too soon to know whether outfielder Ryan Langerhans will have a long or notable career with the Nationals. But let's say, for the sake of argument, that he does, and that the sight of him in a Nats uniform becomes a normal, almost self-evident thing over the next four or five years. Old photos of him in a Braves uni will probably continue to look pretty natural too, since that's where he started his career. But what will always look odd -- and what most people will probably forget about, assuming they ever saw it in the first place -- is the sight of Langerhans in an A's uniform. That's because he was traded twice last week, spending only two days on the Oakland roster.

  • U.S. Air Force Academy Unveils New Men's Football Uniforms (NCAA)
    May 9, 2007
Air Force’s football team will wear new uniforms in 2007 — the second straight season the Falcons have changed their game-day dress. But while there will be some differences in style — Air Force will go back to silver pants for home games — this year’s switch isn’t about fashion. It’s about performance. “The biggest thing is going to be the fit, and that’s the reason why we changed (uniforms) again,” said Dan Siermine, Air Force’s director of athletic equipment. “Last year we got the look we were looking for, but from a performance standpoint, it was not the jersey we felt should be worn at this level.” Last year’s jerseys had a “full cut,” Siermine said. They were so loose Siermine and his staff removed an inch and a half from the side of each jersey but “still didn’t get the fit we were looking for.” Ball carriers and linemen will benefit from the tighter, form-fitting jerseys that will be used in 2007, Siermine said, because there will be less material for opponents to grab.

  • U. of Central Florida Unveils New Athletics Logos (NCAA)
    May 4, 2007

The campaign will conclude at the start of the fall with the opening of Bright House Networks Stadium on campus, and the UCF Convocation Center. The new logos and font will provide a consistent and distinct look for UCF's varsity athletics program. Additionally, In April, the school announced that UCF's teams will again be referred to as the "Knights", utilizing the original nickname chosen by the student body and faculty in 1970. "It is a new beginning at UCF," said UCF Director of Athletics and Executive Vice President Keith Tribble. "Bright House Networks Stadium and the Convocation Center allow us to perform on a grand stage. The increased exposure that we will receive made it all the more critical to adhere to our marketing research which indicated we are entering the most ideal period to update our athletics trademarks. "Research feedback also uncovered inconsistencies in how the UCF athletics logos were utilized in merchandising, in the media and within our own team apparel. The new logos and font allow us to create a common appearance that will be more easily identifiable." UCF will immediately begin the transition to the new marks, with the school's official website, www.UCFathletics.com.
