    January 31, 2007
The 2007 American Association season will mark the 15th season of Explorers baseball in Siouxland and the Sioux City Explorers are beginning the yearlong celebration with the unveiling of a new logo. The special logo, "15th Season in Siouxland," incorporates the Explorers logo along with a number of historical landmarks associated with the city of Sioux City. Landmarks included within the new logo are Sergeant Floyd Monument, City Hall Clock Tower, Orpheum Theater, Veterans Memorial Bridge, Gateway Arches to Sioux City and War Eagle Monument. The anniversary logo was designed by Absolute Screen Art in South Sioux City, which is the primary supplier of clothing and merchandise for the Explorers.

  • NHL Unveils 2008 All-Star Game Logo in Atlanta (National Hockey League)
    January 28, 2007
National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman visited Atlanta today to unveil the official logo for the 2008 NHL All-Star Celebration, which will be hosted by the Thrashers. Bettman, along with Thrashers co-owner Bruce Levenson, President and CEO Bernie Mullin and Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell, revealed the logo to the media at Philips Arena prior to the Thrashers nationally-televised 3:30 p.m. game (NBC) against the Philadelphia Flyers.

  • Pittsburgh Pirates Unveil Red Alternate Uniforms (Major League Baseball/National League)
    January 26, 2007
The Pittsburgh Pirates will have some new jerseys to wear this year and they are a bit of a departure from the normal black and gold uniforms of old. Today, the team unveiled the new look. The Bucs will have four jerseys now - red, white, gray and pin stripes. The red jerseys will serve as an alternate home uniform. They introduced red into their black and gold color scheme for the 1994 All-Star game, but had gotten away from using the color during recent seasons. KDKA's John Steigerwald said, "Talk about a major departure... imagine the Steelers or the Penguins showing up at a game in red jerseys."

  • NHL Referees to Sport New Silver Unis at All-Star Game (National Hockey League)
    January 25, 2007
While most of the uniform-based attention at the NHL All-Star Game was focused on the players' new Reebok-designed attire, another uniform story went largely unheralded and unnoticed. Referees were wearing silver armbands, instead of their usual orange, and ESPN.com has learned that this change will be made permanent next season. "It's coming for next season," NHL spokesperson Nirva Milord said in an e-mail from the All-Star Game in Dallas. "We're just giving it a consistent look with the new NHL logo."

  • NBCSports.com - "Jersey Stories: At Least You Didn't Have Fish Sticks" (National Hockey League)
    January 25, 2007
New Coke, Joanie Loves Chachi and glowing pucks all died a quick death. So did the attempted re-imaging of the New York Islanders. Sure there are Buffaslugs and alternate jerseys, hi-tech, Euro-style unis that many feel sissify the bedraggling warrior players, and plenty of NHL lockout fallout. But perhaps nothing was more damaging to a single group of hockey lovers than the Islanders' "Fish Sticks" facelift of 1995-96 -- damaging in a sense of timing.

  • Minnesota Wild to Wear Red at Home in 2007-2008 (National Hockey League)
    January 23, 2007
The Wild will get rid of their green home jerseys next season as part of the NHL's transition to Reebok's new form-fitting uniforms, team President Doug Risebrough said Monday. The new sweaters will make their debut in Wednesday's NHL All-Star Game here at American Airlines Center but won't be used by teams until next season. Reebok, Risebrough said, asked teams using three jerseys to pare down to two because it initially will be too difficult to make three. Currently teams are allowed to use a third jersey during select games that have been cleared through league offices, and the Wild's alternative jersey — a red, old-fashioned sweater with a lace-up collar — has been their most popular, Risebrough said. So the team will wear the red sweaters at home next season and continue wearing white on the road. Ultimately, he added, teams will be able to add a third jersey, but probably not for a couple of seasons.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Skinny on New NHL Uniforms"
    January 22, 2007
It could've been worse. A lot worse. That's Uni Watch's preliminary reaction to the NHL's new Reebok-designed, snug-fitting "uniform system," which will get a test drive in Wednesday night's All-Star Game and then be used league-wide next season. Uni Watch emphasizes the "preliminary" qualifier there, because for now the NHL is only revealing the All-Star Game version of the new uni. It remains to be seen how the 30 NHL teams will fit their logos and other graphics into the new silhouette. We won't see those designs (several of which aren't even finalized yet) until this spring or summer.

  • NHL Unveils New Uniform System for 2007-2008 (National Hockey League)
    January 22, 2007
Detroit Red Wings veteran defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom certainly likes the NHL's new sleeker and streamlined uniforms. "Especially when I heard that I'm going to be faster," the 15-year veteran and ninth-time All-Star said Monday. "That's something I need now that I'm getting older." After more than two years of testing and designing -- and nearly 100 different versions -- the NHL and Reebok unveiled the new uniform system that will be make its debut at the NHL All-Star game this week -- and for all 30 teams next season. It is the biggest change to NHL uniforms since the early 1960s, when synthetic fabrics replaced the old wool jerseys.

  • Delaware Stars Unveil Name, Logo (United States Basketball League)
    January 19, 2007
Manute Bol, Michael Adams, Anthony Mason, Derek Strong. Before any of them played in the National Basketball Association, they were first discovered in basketball limbo: the United States Basketball League. The minor-league circuit announced plans Thursday to add a Delaware franchise into the 10-team league. The Delaware Stars will play 15 home games on the Stanton campus of Delaware Technical and Community College during a three-month, 30-game schedule from April to June. Tickets will range from $5 to $8.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets New Change Logo for 2007-2008 (National Hockey League)
    January 19, 2007
The Blue Jackets’ third-jersey logo — an Ohio flag swirled around a star — will replace the "CBJ" logo on the club’s home and away jerseys for the 2007-08 season, team president and general manager Doug MacLean said yesterday. "We’ll unveil them at some point during the offseason," MacLean said. The NHL’s 30 teams will begin wearing a lighter, sleeker and more durable jersey next season, which prompted the Blue Jackets’ changes. The concept will be unveiled during All-Star activities in Dallas. The Blue Jackets’ new look will include Civil War cap emblems on the shoulders. The lettering and number fonts are expected to remain the same. The shoulders will not be black, as they are on the current third jersey, nor will there be a "lace-up" look under the chin.

"We are excited to unveil our new hats which we hope will be the symbol of Blazer baseball for many years to come," Shoop said. "In the infancy of the UAB baseball program there was a single 'B' on the hat. It is our hope that this new 'B' will honor the men who have played and coached here in the past."

  • Charlotte Eagles and Lady Eagles Unveil Logos (United Soccer Leagues)
    January 16, 2007
In a full conference room at Doubletree Hotel in Gateway Village, The Charlotte Eagles and Charlotte Lady Eagles released a new logo in a special press conference today. The event marked the beginning of the Eagles 15th Anniversary celebration in 2007. At that time, the new logos were officially unveiled to the public. "Today, a new era begins," stated Nathan Krum of the Eagles. "After a thorough 18 month research and development process, we are excited to move into this anniversary season with a revamped brand while we strive to maintain the tradition of the organization." Krum went on to explain how the main elements of the original logo were kept in the new logo: an eagle laying a soccer ball at the foot of a cross with a globe in the background.

  • Burlington Bees Unveil New Uniforms (Midwest League (baseball))
    January 16, 2007
Attendees of the Burlington Bees/Friends of Community Field Winter Banquet on Saturday night were treated to not only an inside look at the Kansas City Royals organization from General Manager Dayton Moore, but also got the first glimpse of the Bees new uniforms for 2007. The new uniforms feature the new color scheme and logo that the organization unveiled in November. Not only was it a fun evening, but the fundraiser brought in just over $8,000 for the Friends of Community Field, a 501(c)3 non-profit group that raises money for capital improvements to the city-owned Bees stadium.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Most Livable Uni Cities"
    January 15, 2007
Every couple of months, some magazine or Web site is coming out with the latest bogus list of which cities are the best to live in or have the best quality of life or whatever. And what factors are considered when compiling these assessments? Totally irrelevant criteria such as the food, the weather, crime rates, affordability, school systems, cultural scenes, blah blah blah -- as if anyone cared about that stuff. Everyone knows there's only one quality of life issue worth considering when you're deciding where to live: How good are the local teams' uniforms?

  • Memphis Redbirds Unveil Altered Cap Logo (Pacific Coast League (baseball))
    January 13, 2007
When a Minor League team changes its logo, the end result can range from a radical overhaul of the team's identity to a slight variation on a familiar theme. Put the Memphis Redbirds in the latter category. The most striking change to the Redbirds' logo occurs on the team cap, in which a stylized "M" replaces its much blander predecessor.

    January 12, 2007
South Dallas is hoping to see more jaguar traffic in the upcoming years at the future University of North Texas at Dallas' new campus. Of course, these jaguars won't exactly be big cats or the type with leather seats. These will be splashed on signs, decorations, T-shirts and ball caps. This week, officials from the UNT System announced that it chose the jaguar as the official mascot of the yet-to-be-established university being built on 264 acres in South Dallas at Houston School and Camp Wisdom roads. The mascot was one piece of a branding effort that was unveiled this week. UNT leaders revealed the mascot, logo, graphics and school colors -- blue and gold -- at an invitation-only event held at Oak Cliff Country Club in Dallas on Jan. 11.

The Tri-Cities Fever has listened to its fans and scrapped the new logo and uniforms, and will bring back the navy and gold that team has worn the past two seasons as a member of the National Indoor Football League. "The fans had a pretty strong opinion and we wanted to give the fans what they wanted," said Fever general manager Randy Schillinger. Schillinger did say that while the old Fever logo has been restored, there still may be some modifications made.

Sliders had the most nominations in the first round of the contest and received nearly twice as many votes as any of the other three finalists (Boulders, Rockers, and Sluggers).
