  • Northeastern State U. (OK) Drops "Redmen" Nickname (NCAA)
    September 29, 2006
Northeastern State is dropping the Redmen nickname the university has used for more than 80 years. The school informed the NCAA of its decision by phone Friday, with a report to follow. • Major League Soccer to Sell Ad Space on Uniforms (Major League Soccer)
    September 28, 2006
Major League Soccer doesn't have the talent, tradition or TV ratings of more storied American sports leagues. But starting next spring, MLS will be the first major team sports league in the U.S. to showcase ads where viewers can't miss them: on the fronts of player jerseys. Aside from NASCAR, no major American sports league permits prominent advertising on team jerseys, though the practice has long been accepted in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The MLS deal allows clubs to sell their own jersey rights and keep a majority of the revenue, a marked change for the 11-year-old league, which in the past has conducted most of its business through a central office and pooled sponsorship dollars.

Uni Watch is referring here to bat boys, who constitute a stealth element in the world of baseball uniforms. They wear the same unis as the players, but they're subject to a sometimes confusing set of customs and protocols.

  • Toronto Raptors to Banish Purple from Uniforms (National Basketball Association)
    September 19, 2006
The Toronto Raptors are white-washing purple out of their uniforms. Purple, the predominant colour of the Raptors since the team's expansion season, 1995-96, is history. The home uniforms will switch from white and purple to white with red trim, while the road uniforms will no longer be black and purple, but predominately red. The move, according to a Raptors insider, is to give the team a more "Canadian" look. Toronto is the only Canadian city with an NBA franchise, and the team is often referred to around the league as "Canada's Team." The Raptors officially will unveil the new uniforms later this month. As well, the actual Raptors/dinosaur logo, which has been a fixture with the team since expansion, will be replaced on the uniform, and at centre court, with the now popular claw logo.

  • FresnoBee.com - "Quite the Look"
    September 8, 2006
Halloween arrives early at Bulldog Stadium, though some in Oregon consider it fashion weekend. Which costume will the Oregon Ducks football team wear against Fresno State on Saturday? Like a rainbow gone bad, Oregon's jerseys come in yellow, green, black and white — all in jelly-belly-like shades. Matching pants are included, though they can be mixed with different color jerseys. Then there's an all-green helmet, an all-white helmet on the way and a yellow helmet that remains in the works. Once all the helmets are completed, Oregon will have 48 uniform variations, almost enough to avoid repeating looks during a four-year career.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The New Fashions of the NFL"
    September 7, 2006
The 2006 NFL season, which kicks off tonight in Pittsburgh, offers something unique for Uni Watchers: Every single game will feature new uniforms. That's because the officiating crews have new attire this season. At first glance, it looks like they just changed the thickness of the stripes, but there's a lot more to it than that. There's way too much black, from the pocket and the side panel to the underarm and the sleeves (especially on the long-sleeved version). And that's nothing compared to how much black we'll see when the weather turns cold, because current plans call for the standard white knickers to be replaced by (get this) full-length black slacks with a white stripe. Expect lots of bellhop and doorman jokes, but get your licks in fast, because Uni Watch is willing to bet right now that these pants will be quietly abandoned after one season.

Born March 16, 1923, the Polar Bear was officially chosen on that date as mascot for the Ohio Northern athletic teams. The polar bear was chosen by an overwhelming vote of the student body to personify the spirit of ONU. For decades, the Ohio Northern Polar Bear appeared in many forms on uniforms, in drawings, and finally in costume – some were fearsome while others were humorous. At least once, in the 1978 yearbook, the Polar Bear was called “Pipey.” It wasn’t’ until its 75th year, 1998, that The Bear was officially named “Klondike.”
