    July 31, 2006
In a significant ruling that establishes an important precedent for the collegiate licensing industry, the United States District Court Eastern District for Louisiana has ruled that universities can protect their school color schemes as trademarks against unlicensed use by companies. In a landmark decision, the Court granted summary judgment in favor of Louisiana State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern California and The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), the nation’s largest collegiate trademark licensing company, holding Defendant Smack Apparel Company (http://www.smackapparel.com/index.php) liable for intentional trademark infringement based on its use of the recognizable and historic colors of some of the nation’s most powerful collegiate athletic teams.

  • Cleveland Browns Unveil Uniform Modifications for 2006 (National Football League)
    July 21, 2006
To help celebrate of the 60 years of memories and moments that the Browns and the city of Cleveland have shared since the franchise was born in 1946, the team has adopted several vintage uniform characteristics from years gone by for the 2006 season. Browns fans will get their first look at these changes when the team takes the field for training camp on Wednesday, July 26, at the training facility in Berea, OH. Some of these changes will be hard to spot. The numbers on the back of the helmet, for example, will now appear on the right side of the white stripe, rather than on both sides. On the brown jersey, the brown stripe that separates the orange and white stripe on the brown jersey will disappear. The most noticeable of these changes will be the color of both the face mask and shoes. The team will go back to a gray face mask, which it wore from the time the team adopted facemasks as part of the uniform in 1954 until it went to white in 1975. In addition, instead of wearing the white shoes they have worn since 1975, the players will run out onto the field next week wearing black ones.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Uni Watch Hall of Shame"
    July 20, 2006
It all started during last week's MLB All-Star Game Home Run Derby, when several readers sent outraged letters to Uni Watch HQ, decrying the ugly Derby jerseys as among the all-time worst unis ever. "Oh, pish-posh," thought Uni Watch. "True, the All-Star attire was pretty miserable, but any halfway seasoned uni aesthete could come up with at least a dozen worse designs without breaking a sweat. And that gave Uni Watch an idea. Let's have a race to the bottom, a wallow in the muck, a toast to the best of the worst. In short, let's determine, once and for all, the worst sports uniforms of all time.

  • Bloomington PrairieThunder Unveils Logo (United Hockey League)
    July 19, 2006
Derek Booth said he always worried about the logo and crest on his jersey throughout a 13-year playing career. What hockey player wants to wear anything that doesn’t convey a tough-guy image and makes him look like, well, a sissy? Booth, coach of the new Bloomington PrairieThunder in the United Hockey League, doesn’t see that as a problem after seeing his team’s logos revealed Wednesday during a news conference at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The team’s primary logo features a charging buffalo crashing its front hooves onto a sheet of ice. The word PrairieThunder covers the buffalo, with the “P” and “T” in the forms of lightening bolts. The logo incorporates the team colors of navy, silver, old gold and white and will be used at center ice.

The logo, designed by Matt Mastrud, of Fargo, is the first NDSU Bison logo to display only a buffalo head. It has a more three-dimensional look, Mastrud said.  "We struggled with capturing the fierce look of the buffalo, but not being mean and overaggressive," he said. "And we also had to fit it in with the existing logo design."  The buffalo head will appear at first on the road pants for NDSU's football team, coaches' shirts on game days, and on baseball caps and jerseys.

    July 10, 2006
With nearly 3,000 total votes received, fan voting for the “Name York’s Team” contest has concluded, with Revolution narrowly edging out White Roses as the most popular among the five finalists. The York Revolution is scheduled to begin play in the spring of 2007. “The thousands of votes received is another indication of the tremendous momentum that is building for minor league baseball in York,” stated Hall-of-Famer Brooks Robinson, who in 1955 played his first professional game in York. “I am excited about the name ‘Revolution’ as it pays homage to the historical significance of York County, while representing a new era of baseball in this great city.” The name Revolution connects with York’s colonial past, when the Continental Congress met in York and passed the Articles of Confederation during the Revolutionary War. Following the American Revolution, York briefly became the first capital of the United States.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "What's Under Your Bill?"
    July 7, 2006
After Kirby Puckett's death, several MLB players saluted him at the beginning of the 2006 season by inscribing his initials or uni number on their caps. But the MLB office quickly put the kibosh on that, telling players they couldn't write extracurricular messages on their headwear.  But there's one part of the cap where graffiti has always been permitted, and many players are continuing to write things there: underneath the visor.
