  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "The Latest in MLB Uniforms"
    March 30, 2006
The start of the Major League Baseball season is just a few days away, which can only mean three things: Mark Prior and Kerry Wood are headed for the DL; you'd better finally get started on that tax return; and it's time for Uni Watch's MLB season preview, now in its eighth annual edition.  Uni Watch has already covered the season's most visible change: those annoying new CoolFlo batting helmets, which are being worn by the Cubs, Angels, Diamondbacks, Devil Rays, Orioles, Dodgers, Mets, Twins, A's, Braves and Padres. Fortunately, most of this year's other changes are more benign, and several are quite laudable.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Crimson and Clover"
    March 23, 2006
OK, it's official. The second-best baseball team on the planet -- at least according to the results of the World Baseball Classic -- wears red pants. Judging by the e-mails Uni Watch has been receiving, lots of fans have a major problem with that. Uni Watch agrees that Cuba's full-on atomic fireball look was bad news (much like those mid-1970s Indians disasters) but thinks the red pants actually looked pretty cool when paired with the white jerseys, especially when the cuffs were hiked up to reveal the blue socks. And you might be surprised to learn that there's an old-school precedent for the red britches: the 1936 Reds.

  • New York Times - "The Jersey Boys, and Their Obsession With Double-Knit"
    March 19, 2006

    By JOHN FREEMAN GILL

About seven years ago, the girlfriend of a writer named Paul Lukas grew weary of his eccentric habit of hollering at the television every time he noticed a quirk of sports uniform design. ''She got tired of me shouting, 'Look at that guy's socks compared to that other guy's socks!' '' Mr. Lukas, a goateed 41-year old Park Slope resident, recalled a week ago. ''And she said, 'You know, Paul, I think you need an outlet.' '' That outlet turned out to be a column called Uni Watch, Mr. Lukas's fondly obsessive chronicle and critique of sports uniforms. It ran for four years in The Village Voice, then briefly on Slate.com, before finding a cult following in 2004 on ESPN.com, where it still appears.

Each week, Mr. Lukas receives hundreds of e-mail messages from a far-flung readership as fascinated as he is with such pressing issues as why the Chicago White Sox don't wear white socks (they did in the franchise's early days), why the uniforms of Canada's 2006 Olympic speed-skating team looked so wrinkly, and the story behind those reptilian-looking batting helmets the Mets are sporting in spring training.

Mr. Lukas has become the high priest of an offbeat subculture of people who didn't know one another. Hoping to foster community, he recently did what few priests do: he invited the congregation to a bar.

Thus was born the Uni Watch Athletic Aesthetics Party. Last Sunday afternoon, about 40 sports-attire buffs convened at Southpaw, a Park Slope nightspot. Some had come from as far away as Denver, and as one might imagine, the decision on what to wear to the event was fraught.

''I thought I was going to be the only jerk here wearing a jersey, but it turns out I'm surrounded by jerks,'' said Robert McGill, a 40-year-old graphic designer from Hackensack, N.J. Mr. McGill, who was wearing a 1980's Seattle Mariners pullover that had belonged to a middling pitcher named Glenn Abbott, proudly pointed out the ''game-worn tobacco juice stain'' on his chest.

As period baseball scenes played on a large screen opposite the bar, sneaker heads, patch gurus and color mavens milled about, chatting about uniform arcana. ''I have over 22,000 confirmed values of color in my database,'' said Donovan Moore, the 43-year-old president (and sole member) of the Society for Sports Uniforms Research. ''I'm insane.''

Tom O'Grady, a sports branding consultant in a 1996 Houston Rockets jersey, replied, ''You're frightening, but that's O.K.''

Later, five panelists took questions from the audience, touching on matters like ''the double-knit revolution,'' and shared observations like this one from Mr. Moore: ''The Carolina Panthers use a different color black from the rest of the NFL., and that's important.''

Mr. O'Grady then made a prediction to the audience: ''When there's 10,000 people in 10 years, like the Westminster dog show, it'll be because Paul started it all.'' But in a private moment a few minutes later, Mr. Lukas offered a less grandiose take on the day's events: ''Everyone was a little less dysfunctional than I expected.''

  • El Paso Diablos Unveil 2006 All-Star Logo (American Association (baseball))
    March 14, 2006
The El Paso Diablos have unveiled the new 2006 All Star logo for the American Association / Can Am All Star game. The game, which will be held on July 18 at 7:05 PM, will be hosted by the Diablos at Cohen Stadium. The logo was designed to represent the unique southwestern El Paso flavor using chili peppers to represent the star on the Franklin Mountains. Measuring 459 feet in length and 278 feet in width, the star was originally lit as an El Paso Christmas tradition in 1940. Since World War II the star has been lit every year and has taken on a special significance within the El Paso community. In 1980 the star remained lit for 444 days during the Iran hostage crisis and for over a year in 1990 in support of Ft. Bliss and all US troops during Operation Desert Storm. The star on the Franklin Mountains now remains lit the entire year.

  • Minnesota Vikings Designing New Uniforms for 2006 (National Football League)
    March 14, 2006
The Vikings are changing quarterbacks and uniforms for the 2006 season. On the day they traded Daunte Culpepper to Miami, several other players were in the New York City area for fittings of a new uniform the team is having designed. New starting quarterback Brad Johnson, tight end Jermaine Wiggins and cornerback Antoine Winfield were among the players who made the trip. Steve LaCroix, vice president of sales and marketing, confirmed that the team is redesigning its uniform but would neither reveal details nor comment on a report that the design includes purple pants to be worn at home with purple jerseys.

  • Boise Hawks to Unveil New Logo for 2007 (Northwest League (baseball))
    March 10, 2006
    "
As we approach our 20th anniversary season, these are exciting times for the Boise Hawks Baseball Club and our fans. One of our most pressing issues is the design of a new logo for the 2007 season that will lead us into our next 20 years. The licensing agreement we have with Minor League Baseball on our current logo is about to expire. Because of that, we've hired Plan B Branding, a company out of San Diego, to help us with the design of a new logo we'll unveil next year."

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Helmets, Hats and Snazzy Jerseys"
    March 8, 2006
Let's say you're an official Major League Baseball equipment licensee. But due to the complexities of MLB's licensing arrangements, you're not allowed to put your logo on the gear the players are wearing. What a gyp, right? What's the point of being associated with MLB if you can't put your brand's graphic stamp on the game? Is there anything you can do? Unfortunately for the rest of us, there is. And that story line is now playing out in at least two places during spring training.
