  • Edmonton Rush Unveils Logo (National Lacrosse League)
    August 26, 2005
The Edmonton Rush Lacrosse Club unveiled its much anticipated visual identity today reflecting style, speed and strength. The Rush signature is a hand-rendered script taking its cue from skateboard culture, RPG video games and chopper graphics. Its distressed look proudly boasts the marks of battle. The signature is italicized to reflect the quick speed of the game and has the spikes of armor. The team has also updated its website to reflect the new look, www.edmontonrush.com. The colors of the primary Edmonton Rush identity are black and silver. They represent warrior colors that are tough, metallic and polished. In the secondary identity, the team introduced an assertive amber. Together the color palette reflects the intensity of a force to be reckoned with.

  • Uni Watch by Paul Lukas - "Time to Go Back to School"
    August 25, 2005
In the immortal words of Principal McGee, "If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter." That's Uni Watch's back-to-school rallying cry as another college football season is upon us. Not that the NCAA is so easy to support these days -- at least not in terms of athletic aesthetics. Many of the schools now take their marching orders from the big sportswear manufacturers (often with disastrous results), when it should be the other way around. And even teams that have maintained relatively old-school designs still face the depressing spectacle of wearing corporate logos on their chests, an ongoing disgrace that makes it hard for Uni Watch to take the college game seriously.

  • New Mexico State U. to Strip "Pistol" from Mascot's Name (NCAA)
    August 15, 2005
New Mexico State University's mascot, Pistol Pete, is being disarmed. University officials have also stripped the word "Pistol" from Pete's name. The new logo shows Pete twirling a lasso. The old Pete toted a pistol. The changes are part of a marketing plan to remake the university's image on the national stage. Officials have been working on a redesign of Pistol Pete for months. Athletics director McKinley Boston said the university plans to unveil the new Pete later this month. The decision to remove the pistol had more to do with a consensus when picking from several designs of the new logo, rather than any push for the mascot to stop brandishing a weapon, Boston said.

  • Tennessean.com - "These Nicknames are Major League"
    August 11, 2005
As new minor league baseball parks have popped up around the country and as teams have changed major league affiliations, wacky nicknames have become increasingly popular. The days when a minor league club carries the name of its parent team have faded. Instead, the minors are crawling with at least 11 varieties of cats, as well RiverDogs, SeaWolves, Grasshoppers and even Wild Things. In the search for something different to sell themselves, plenty of teams have strayed from animals too. So we also have concept names like the Power, personality names like the Rascals, and inanimate object names like the Biscuits.

  • Grambling State U. to Keep "G" Logo (NCAA)
    August 1, 2005
It turns out the Grambling State University football team won't have a new logo on its helmets this season after all. GSU Athletics Director Willie Jeffries tells Region 10/FOX 14 that the Tigers will retain their familiar logo this fall, a yellow oval G on a black helmet, in the same style as the Green Bay Packers and Georgia Bulldogs. After © issues surfaced, the school announced plans to make a change in May, something a lot of Tiger fans weren't happy to hear. At the time, officials said the new logo would be ready in plenty of time for the 2005 campaign.
